You can advance if you are one of the "good 'ol boys club"
Project Manager (Former Employee), Chicago, IL – May 13, 2013
Pros: good training in the southern region of the us
Cons: dishonest, untrustworthy management in chicago
Started out with the company in a lower position to get my foot into the door in a supposed "Good company to work for". The management staff in the southern region will reward you and help you to progress in your career path. The management in the Chicago area will give you NO training, have high expectations....yet never explain them to you prior to – more... your delivery date, and if you are not part of the "in" crowd they will out right lie to you. I had concerns about other employees and their motives and was told not to worry about it. Management LIED to me about this, and there was some back door dealings that transpired while I was there.....ETHICAL my behind. I do not believe that when a manager tells you to "shut up" and yells at you, that gives them the reason to dicipline you later for speaking up about it. Terrible, I hated going into work because I always had to be looking over my shoulder, instead of doing my job! Left the company, and immediately was making $15K more....they pay you poorly and expect your left leg and right arm. – less

great place to work if you like to work hard and like your time off
General Maintenance Technician (Former Employee), deadhorse AK – May 7, 2013
Pros: free food!, free housing, free gear -boots, you only work half a year, very good pay
Cons: your in the frozen tundra of alaska for three weeks strait with12 hour shifts, no alcohol, its dark most of the time for night and day shift.
Out to the trucks at 630 with full gear ready to work. Change out with your day crew call your lead to know what your doing and where it is. Tackle obstacles in a safe and efficient way. Wrap up/ clean up let your day shift counterparts know where and what you did.
There are three main jobs in my department scaffolding, insulating, insulation removal/ – more... asbestos abatement. I am familiar with all of these and there safety precautions.
The management system is simple it starts with hands who do the work, leads who are responsible for the work being done and the safety of the hands that work for him, foremen who delegate work to the leads and take care of issues that are above the leads control, and supervisors who manage medical issues and serious problems between workers(rare but it happens) they keep things moving.
The workers there are literally from all over the world and almost avery age. A lot of former military and skilled laborers. Very few unlikeable guys.
The hardest part of the job is the ridicules cold. it regularly stayed at -20 to -30 iv personally worked in -75 (with wind) however it just causes a lot of problems from leaks and tools breaking to your body just hurting from the cold.
However there are enjoyable parts to the job. My favorite was building scaffolding. I really enjoyed the amount of thought and carful planing that went into the design and the accomplishment when the job was done. It was also fun to climb around where people haven't been in thirty years. – less

Good for recent grads needing practical knowledge
Current Employee (Current Employee), Colorado – May 7, 2013
Pros: skill acquisition for recent grads
Cons: management, pay, work/life balance
That's about it. Poor management skills, you will never be paid your worth because it is contract work. Advancement opportunities are non existent unless you're ready to move. Managers are more about sucking up to clients then caring about employees under them. I don't have any good things to say about this company. Get in, acquire some skills, and – more... get out. – less

Like walking on egg shells
International Payroll Specialist III (Former Employee), Englewood, CO – April 25, 2013
Pros: flexability to work from home during a strom
Cons: everything else.
The company has a very phony facade. The processes were for the most part were great as far as planning and idea’s however not very realistic, it was like you were being set up to fail. My supervisor could have used a Supervisor training course as well as learning how to keep confidential information confidential. All in all this was a position of moving – more... targets, what I was told to do today was no longer OK tomorrow. I am glad to be gone from this jeckel and hide management team… – less

Pros: geat pay and benifits
Cons: job that was supposed to be 3 months took 14 months
CH2M Hill is a great company but the sight I was on in Fort Nelson had very Poor on sight management. Most everyone that worked there was very professional but its hard to accomplish much when the entire job changes every day.

CH2M Hill
Buyer 2 (Current Employee), Golden, CO – February 13, 2013
CH2M Hill gave me the opportunity to get my career in progress and to be able to live in Denver, Colorado. Over the years the company has focused less on its employees while being an employee owned company. Their goals as a company have changed and do not fit what I am now looking for in a long term employer.

Hostile work enviroment
craftsman (Former Employee), lindon,utah – January 27, 2013
Pros: pays every week
Cons: hostile work enviroment
I have been with the company for just over a month, the first thing I can say is that after our safety meeting some guy came in,I think was a manager and told everyone he would like to fire everyone for any error or if you get sick, you are fired,he says it is just business to fire everyone. Real nice welcome. Then they put us with a pipe crew that takes – more... pride in putting people down, telling them they are all stupid. The foreman likes to bully people and can fire you for anything at the drop of a hat,he puts people down on a daily basis. The guy is a drunk who harasses the work force every day because he can,all the guys already want to leave or transfer to another pipe crew, I am so stressed out, I have to take a medication just to cope with the abuse. – less

Good place, poor management
Project Accountant (Former Employee), Chantilly, VA – January 17, 2013
It was a great place for awhile but the culture kind of shifted along with some organizational changes. I ended up with two managers above me that treated people fairly poorly. That on top of being in a dead end job was enough. Annual raises were often cents and a low % despite performance.

Co-workers were a redeeming aspect. Most everyone there was – more... very nice and pleasant to be around. – less

It has been a pleasure to work for such a good company.
Project Assistant VI/Document Controls (Current Employee), Anchorage, AK – January 17, 2013
Pros: good pay, okay benefits, great work environment, respect of coworkers
Cons: lack of projects to work on right now.
Typical day consists of variety of tasks. Have learned a great deal about project design and construction. I've seen the management of this company take extreme measures to the benefit of the company over the benefit of it's stockholders. Couldn't ask for better coworkers. Hardest part of the job is meeting the deadlines. Most enjoyable part of the – more... job is the variety of work/tasks and being part of an awesome team. – less

Not a "lifelong" career move
AP Shared Services (Former Employee), Englewood, CO – January 14, 2013
Pros: stable company, on site cafeteria, starbucks and gym
Cons: too many to continue working for company!
For the pros, the company seems to be stable and profitable. The benefits are also pretty good, but unless you are a manager or engineer, the pay isn't what it should be.

For the cons....there are so many! The employees I worked with hated their jobs and were treated like assembly line workers. Management was consistently moving staff to whichever – more... "fire" there was each day which led to a sense of NO accomplishments! There is barely any training for new hires which gives you the feeling of sink or swim! There is a consistency of never knowing how to handle an issue because there are so many factors that must be considered before "pushing through" the invoice.

Any time off is typically granted, but the manager replies with "are you making this time up (by working weekends or OT) or using PTO? Which takes away from having a leisurely day of vacation. BEWARE....OT is consistently requested! And it's more a subtle requirement" to pitch in.

And as far as mistakes....GOOD LUCK! Every mistake (regardless of the impact) counts against you. IE: you, your Lead supervisor, and the department manager are emailed every mistake you make and then it is "used against" you at review time to determine your productivity level. The productivity level is determined daily as well and watched carefully by managers....so beware of having bad days!

Management is more concerned with the bottom line in this department rather than the morale and keeping good employees. And once in this department, don't even consider moving because advancement opportunities are few and from what I saw VERY rare! – less
