Decent benefits, bad management
Animal Care Technician (Current Employee) –  Groton, CTDecember 6, 2017
Contract sites determine what you will be doing for work, Charles River management says they will fight for you as an employee but it does not show, management prefers to work via email or IM rather than being onsite to deal with things, quite often excuses or broken promises are made. Although they label you an animal care technician and require animal experience, they don't tell you the majority of your work is facility/janitorial work and cagewash. You work with the animals when it's convenient or in an emergency situation.
Overall, good schedule, health/life benefits are good. Pay is ok for the work you do, but if you are a skilled person with significant animal experience this job is not for you. You get taken advantage of and the management allows it.

Amazing experience, not so much pay
Research Assistant II (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILDecember 4, 2017
At the Chicago site the managers are all great. From the lab supervisors to the directors, they're all very personable and very approachable. I can't stress how sincere they are in wanting to see you grow as a scientist or in whatever career path you choose. The work is exhausting and the hours can sometimes be long, but the other scientists that work here more than make up for it. Everyone's on the grind, and everyone knows it. So the workflow and atmosphere accommodates for everyones mood. Really shows the managerial prowess in hiring the right candidates. The only drawback would be the pay.. Although it doesn't matter in the long run, because the experience you gain from working here is invaluable. You're exposed to many different aspects of the industry from QA to R&D: it well outweighs the lack of pay. Benefits and Perks at the company are also a plus. Very good plans established for employees. For someone with little experience as a scientist or a recent college grad, I'd highly recommend this role at this site specifically.
Pros
Benefits, Other Employees, Managers, Work-Life Balance, Exposure to Industry
Cons
Low pay for the work expected

Sample Management Technician I (Current Employee) –  Reno, NVNovember 24, 2017
Company genuinely cares about their employees- as people, and as workers. Plenty of growth opportunities (if you put in the effort). Great benefits, either individually and for families.

Fast pace very low moral
Technician (Former Employee) –  Ashland, OHNovember 12, 2017
I was paid well for my position when compared to other facilities but I was paid far under my coworkers. There is too much management and they don't listen. Upper management (building A) is disconnected from what is really going on in the lab (building B). You either are not allowed to get any over time or you are on forced overtime with insane hours. It just depends on your position. Overall the moral is very low. Most people there are not happy with their jobs or their supervisors. Too many rooms, not enough staff. The animal acre is very good overall but they could do better. The management directly in charge of the animals just are stuck in their ways and don't want to continue improving the lives of their animals because it's too much work and they "have always done it that way". Overall the animal welfare is good, just could be better. Management at the site talks a great game and tells you what you want to hear but doesn't follow through often. If you need anything done you need to keep asking and emailing because everyone is so overworked they often forget to get you needed information or process your papers in a timely manner.
Pros
Good benefits, overall fair wages
Cons
Overworked, understaffed, disconnect of management.

PTS Associate (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCNovember 10, 2017
The work is very easy and simple to understand, but is very fast paced and repetitive. You have to hit a certain daily production limit before you get off.

I love working in CRL as people are friendly. Only draw back is salary and promotions as it slows down when there is no projects running, salary increment takes longer period of waiting.

High current employee turnover, most people do not appear to enjoy their jobs. General negative vibe within the building. Great benefits, decent pay, but unhappy employees.

Still working here (Current Employee) –  Malvern, PANovember 2, 2017
Overall the company is going in the right direction. UP. However, the Malvern site is crumbling. Management does not hold anyone accountable and this means a lot of people put in minimum effort causing other to have to work harder. There is also very little(if any) recognition for working hard. The only good things are you can work whatever hours you want as long as you work at least 40 hours a week. And you can work as much overtime as you want. They will let you burn out. Oh and I hope you like doing the same thing over and over and over. Thats all that place does.
Pros
Flexible work hours as long as your over 40 hrs a week(7-3 or 11-8)
Cons
Culture is terrible. Everyone points fingers instead of taking responsibility.

The people at Charles River are great to be around from day in to day out. They are all friendly and welcoming. The job can be fast and stressful and you can expect lots of overtime in this career.

Clinical Research Associate (Former Employee) –  Sparks, NVOctober 28, 2017
It is difficult to meet timepoints in a preclinical trial when you are a single parent. Study timepoints are often early in the morning or sometimes extremely late at night. The job is salaried, so you are not compensated for overtime. You must also be comfortable working with animal models such as cynomologous and Rhesus monkeys.

Lab Technician (Former Employee) –  Charleston, SCOctober 24, 2017
Part of an assembly line. The people I worked with were awesome. I used a vacuum pipet to drain off horseshoe crab blood, added a salt solution, and sent it the bottle to the next station. The end result was to test for bacteria in medicines.
Pros
Felt like was doing something important

Did the same thing all day

Animal Care Technician (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILSeptember 26, 2017
You don't get much break time, constantly working all day and sweating. Management isn't the best and moving up is nearly impossible unless you work there for around 3 years. Pay can increase if you get certifications and there's good benefits. But if you're not a fan of cleaning a LOT then don't work here.

A leader in Biologics Testing Solutions
Lab Technician II (Current Employee) –  Malvern, PASeptember 16, 2017
Good place to start your career and room to move up. Growing in the industry means continued expansion of the facilities is needed. Cramp work space at times. Some equipment is outdated. Pay is lower than working for big pharma but no layoffs. Hire individuals right out of school to permanent positions, you won't find that at big pharma. Pay gets better quickly, increasing by 33% over the first year.
Pros
Career starting and work your way up.
Cons
Lower than average pay.
