Supportive, challenging work environment
Assistant Teacher, K (Former Employee), Charlotte, NC –
Pros: benefits, job security, fun coworkers, job with positive values and culture
Cons: small salary, kind-of long workday (9 hrs. w/ break)
I worked with elementary-school aged kids, in whole classes, small groups, and/or one-on-one. I also assisted the teachers by communicating information and making and organizing materials for them. I learned how to be flexible and do whatever was needed; I also learned both one-on-one and group leadership skills (and gained a lot of respect for that – more...  role), and, also, a lot of teamwork skills. Both my managers and co-workers were extremely supportive, easy to communicate with, and fun to work with. The most positive aspects of the job were definitely getting the opportunity to work with kids, and help them learn new things and influence them. I sometimes had difficulty in disciplining them, however, and was sometimes confused about which tasks I should be completing, which were the hardest, or most challenging, parts, of the job. Overall, though, I loved the school I worked in, and even Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools as a district (except for the compensation!). The only reason I quit eventually, was because of the stress I felt of being unable to discipline students sometimes. – less

Being a teacher
CTE Business Teacher (Current Employee), Cornelius, NC –
Pros: many great and talented professionals
Cons: must have plenty of patience
Plenty of tasks to keep you busy all day. Working with students is great until you are assigned students who dont really want to work or be there. Imagine your worst performing employee, who is always late, rude, disrespectful and does not contribute to the betterment of the environment, and now imagine that you can not fire them for six months and – more...  your performance is based on theirs. – less

Employees became "family", was a treasured employment
Part time clerical position (Former Employee), Charlotte, NC –
Pros: able to work independently, paid overtime.
Cons: limited lunch hour (30 min)
Daily submission of payroll for 55+ employees. Recived direct supervision from Director of Storage & Distribution Department. Processed correspondence, researched projects. Handled Workers Compensation claims. Maintained department budget. Oversaw overall operation of office equipment (computers, fax machines, telephones).

Nice management in the South Area to work for
Bus Driver (Current Employee), South Area Transportation –
Pros: great schedule for moms.
Cons: possibility you won't have work over the summer.
I have worked off and on for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for many years and have seen a lot of changes - primarily for the good. We have radios on the buses now which enables us to communicate with the office if we have any problems or questions. They can also get a hold of us if they need to. We have gone to a paperless payroll and that is nice as – more...  well. We just clock in and out on the bus. We seem to have more "back-up" now than in years past. By that, I mean if we have a problem out on the road we are more likely to get some support than we would have before. With the way the children are these days we have to have help with them occasionally. Then last, but not least, the buses are much, much nicer than they use to be. They're much quieter, air-conditioned and have an air-ride seat. – less
