Checkers Drive-In Restaurants, Inc. was founded in 1986 in Mobile, Alabama, then later moved to Clearwater, Florida, and is now headquartered in Tampa, Florida. The Company went public in 1991 after first growing into an 85-restaurant chain in nine Southeastern states. In 1999, Checkers merged with Rally's, which was founded in 1985 in Louisville, Kentucky, expanding the chain into the Midwest and West.
In June of 2006, the Company went private through a merger with Taxi Holdings Corp., an affiliate of Wellspring Capital Management LLC, a private equity firm.
