About Cheshire Medical Center

In pursuit of its vision to build a healthier community, Cheshire Medical Center announced its support for a new Keene Family YMCA on Summit Road at the campaign kick-off to raise money for the new facility. "The Keene Family YMCA makes fitness accessible to individuals of all ages, abilities, and incomes," said Tom Link, Administrative Director – more... of Marketing, Planning, and Community Relations, who spoke on behalf of the hospital at the event, which took place at Keene High School June 24. "The programs and services of the YMCA build strong individuals, families, and communities. We need to nurture and support growth at these three levels to be the healthiest community possible." Cheshire Medical Center envisions Cheshire County as the healthiest community in the nation by 2020. The area's primary health center and physician practice call their objective Vision 2020. As part of its pursuit of improved wellness, the hospital plans to encourage the community to make positive changes, such as eating wisely and exercising more, to prevent and manage chronic diseases influenced by lifestyle. "One way we can engage people in becoming more active in their daily lives is by increasing access to fitness facilities such as the YMCA," said Link. "The new building will be more convenient to individuals with mobility issues." Link cited stairwells, handicap accessible locker rooms and parking issues as current obstacles to individuals who use canes, walkers, or wheelchairs, which will be resolved with a new building. Cheshire Medical Center is the lead supporter for the Keene Family YMCA's Wellness Center, which will house the facility's strength training, cardiovascular, and other exercise equipment. The hospital will help fund costs for constructing that portion of the new facility with a grant to the YMCA's capital campaign. "We are very pleased to support the construction of the Wellness Center. It will offer a safe, state-of-the-art setting for people of all abilities to improve musculoskeletal and cardiovascular health," said Link. "Improving access to programs and services is one of the primary ways we can improve wellness in our region." Construction for the new YMCA is slated to begin in 2008 and end in late 2009. – lessMore from ZoomInfo »
