Cheyney's 275-acre campus is situated on rolling hillsides in Southeastern Pennsylvania, an area changing from rural to suburban. Founded in 1837, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania is the first historically Black institution of learning in America. The college began it existence in Philadelphia as the Institute for Colored Youth. The Institute for Colored Youth successfully provided a free classical education for qualified young people. In 1902, the school was moved to George Cheyney's farm, 24 miles west of Philadelphia. Further name changes followed until, in 1983, Cheyney joined the State System of Higher Education (SSHE) as Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
