About Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters
You don't have to be royalty to be a patient at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters (CHKD). CHKD is Virginia's only free-standing, full-service pediatric facility, and as such provides medical, dental, and therapeutic services to children and adolescents through the age of 21 years old. The 210-bed hospital has a staff of more than 500 physicians, – more... and has the state's only dedicated pediatric emergency center, which gets more than 47,000 patient visits each year. CHKD also operates several outpatient pediatric centers throughout the state. The not-for-profit system was formed in 1961.
The CHKD Children's Medical Group operates 15 primary care practices for children throughout Virginia and in northeastern North Carolina.
Like most of the rest of the health care sector, CHKD saw some difficult financial times in 2008 and 2009. As a result the hospital froze nearly 100 non-clinical vacant positions in early 2009. It also closed its on-campus day care center and made some staffing cuts.
Despite the some rough financial waters, CHKD began construction on a new health center in late 2008. The 60,000-square-foot, three-story building -- slated to open in late 2009 -- will house surgical group practices, sports medicine, radiology, specialists offices and outpatient clinics; Chesapeake Pediatrics, a primary care practice, and a community meeting room. – less
