A reverend, a deacon, and an insurance salesman walk into a bar... Perhaps not, but they do have business together. Church Mutual is the largest provider of property/casualty insurance, including liability, and workers' compensation coverage, to the religious market. The company insures more than 100,000 religious organizations including churches, offices, schools, senior living facilities, conference centers, and camps. It also provides homeowners insurance to clergy members. Licensed throughout the US, Church Mutual also offers a variety of risk management resources including seminars and safety videos. Regional representatives sell almost 90% of the firm's policies. Church Mutual was founded in 1897.
While the company was founded by Lutherans, it does not retain any single denominational affiliation and instead serves religious institutions of all denominations. Among its specialty products are insurance for mission groups travelling internationally and coverage for professional liability and sexual misconduct liability.
Besides sales made through its more than 180 regional reps, about 10% of Church Mutual's premium volume is generated in five states through independent agents who specialize in church insurance.
In 2010 the company began offering coverage to non-church-affiliated, not-for-profit camps and conference centers. Church Mutual broke records that year as policyholder surplus exceeded the $400 million mark for the first time in its history and assets grew to more than $1 billion. The firm also added almost 7,000 new commercial accounts and had renewals of premium and issued policies greater than 90%. Its annual premium volume was $584 million.
