Easy to get a job early in your career but very little training to grow. I can see why this place is used as a stepping stone to gain experience then move on--they don't value experienced staff and often play favorites which makes it difficult for teams to be strong and unified. Many supervisors display poor behavior & the good old boys club is strong as ever here. Some people get 'promotions' who don't have appropriate skills based on favoritism. Recently, departments have increased pay above market rates and have inexperienced people placed in them, resulting in poor service. Happy to be out and moving on.
The benefits package is very strong. There are some employee events held during the year. Some departments are very good about supporting employees by recognizing them often and other departments do nothing for their employees. Some managers are flexible and understanding about last minute issues (sick kids, school delays, other real-life instances) but some have no tolerance and that is not fair to employees. City policy is applied based on who you are and it should be equal towards all employees.
In the years I was employed there, very few trainings were provided in-house and requests to participate in outside ones were denied.
