Budget Analyst (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILJuly 5, 2016
I worked in more of an administrative role of City Hall, assisting with financial inquiries and reports.
The pay was okay (for entry-level) but rarely is opportunity given to go past your skill set.
Promotion only happens based on how long you've been working with the City so if your game is longetivity then City Hall may be for you.
The coworkers are friendly but it's hit-and-miss with management. As a result of the "longetivity" of management, rarely is an employee given a chance to surpass management.

It's a good place to start or end a career.
If your goal, however, is to make change or improve the City look elsewhere. You will be in bureaucratic heck and you will play the game of "pass the buck down the hill" or else you'll be fired.

Well, you also can get a pension but at the rate the City is behind on payments it won't be long before the City has to go bankrupt.
Pros
Clean office, first-hand politics experience
Cons
Way behind on technology, second-hand politics experience, grumpy management, not very agile.

Custodial Worker (Former Employee) –  Chicago, ILJune 30, 2016
A typical day at work included cleaning the Chicago Public Library and police stations, general cleaning of bathrooms, spot cleaning walls, vacuuming floors, mopping, high and low, and dusting. I learned how to work with the public. It gives you patience. My supervisor was a great person to work for it was complete teamwork. The most challenging part of the job was snow removal during a storm. Overall, the experience was enjoyable, working with supporting and encouraging co workers.
Pros
I worked there for 14.5 and enjoyed going every day
Cons
Removing the snow at very Low temp.

Youth Service Coordinator (Current Employee) –  Chicago, ILJune 28, 2016
We receive all types of calls from community residents to community stake-holders about any and everything. Most people want a quick fix but do not want to follow the instructions of making a paper trail for their complaint. Many calls are not criminal but the caller still thinks that the police should do something. Many of the callers and/or walk ins do not want to assist with fixing their issues they just want anyone else to fix it and many times is't just a matter of them getting involved on their blocks.
Pros
Working with so many different personalities, cultures, and backgrounds while being accepted by many.
Cons
CPS not being receptive

Investigator II (Current Employee) –  Chicago, ILMay 19, 2016
I enjoy serving the citizens of Chicago. The hardest part of the job is trying to show the citizens of Chicago that you are doing fair investigations and you make decisions based on the evidence presented before you. I have learned to do thorough investigations and have received training in order to conduct investigations.

Director of Intergovernmental Relations (Current Employee) –  Chicago, ILApril 21, 2016
I've learned alot about people overall. It is not easy dealing with the public. Each day is different. The hardest part is not being able to help everyone. It's tough to see that alot of people are hurting in this city. The most enjoyable part about this job are the people are work with.
