A typical day would begin with a short briefing with the Mayor about the appointments scheduled and communications that needed to be written.
I learned to work in a fast paced environment, work directly with policy and law makers, understand the process behind the scenes of governing and running a city. I also learned that governing is a give-and-take process.
The hardest part of my job was perfecting the Mayors message. At any given moment prior to a council meeting we may have learned that a council members vote was changing, in effect changing the message that needed to be relayed to that council member in the public meeting. Also then helping the Mayor deliver that message in a manor that is professional, but with results, was challenging.
The most enjoyable part of my job was writing press releases that turned into newspaper stories. I also wrote a letter to the editor with the intent of getting it published, which I was able to do. Those experiences were thrilling.
