unhealthy work condition
Employee (Current Employee) –  Portland, ORFebruary 22, 2018
After the move to new location, problems with work environment did not resolve. In the old location, cold air conditioning would be overcooling humans and reduce their immune system. In the new location, cold comes from the floor since first floor is not occupied and not ventilated/heated. The new location makes legs feel cold. It is not fun to seat in multi-layered clothing. If you value your health, think first twice!

Life Guard, Swim Instructor, Supervisor (Current Employee) –  Portland, ORFebruary 16, 2018
-There's lack of advancement.
-Lack of hours.
-Lack of staff to fill in when needed.
-Management has drama issues and vent down to their employees instead of to their own supervisors.
-Not a long term job unless you're okay with waiting years and years for any kind of advancement that isn't guaranteed.

Outreach and Community Involvement Specialist (Former Employee) –  Portland, ORFebruary 14, 2018
Good work while it lasted. It is difficult to become a "regular" employee as the competition for city positions is steep.

Work plans were thorough and management was supportive.

Work with great people, continuously learning, management has both good and bad qualities every manager is different, the workplace is a safe environment to work in, hardest part of the job is the evening commute, and most enjoyable part are the people I work with.

Manager (Current Employee) –  Portland, ORNovember 22, 2017
This is a tough but rewarding workplace if you care about the citizens of Portland. Workgroup health varies between bureaus. As is the case for most employers, there are positive and productive environments and others that struggle. Overall, I believe it is one of the better workplaces to be.

Overworked
Field Service Technician (Former Employee) –  Portland, OROctober 24, 2017
City of Portland was an overworked job environment where management expected too much output in a typical work day. Since I worked on the photo radar and traffic lights I was discoursed from talking about my job to anyone.
Pros
Short drive to work
Cons
Overworked

Field Service Technician (Former Employee) –  Portland, OROctober 23, 2017
City of Portland contract supplier (Conduent) has a unique culture in that they put an enormous amount of work load on you and expect you to achieve that work-load in a given 8 hour day period.
Pros
Paid parking garage expense, paid mileage expense
Cons
Enourmous amout of work-load put on you

Director (Former Employee) –  Portland, ORSeptember 18, 2017
The city of Portland is a productive and meaning place to work. The services provided to the community are essential to the safety and livability of the city. I enjoyed my time at the city and enjoyed meeting employees from different background. It places a lot of emphasis on its employee's professional growth and happiness.

The overall daily routine is usually filled with positive interactions between co-workers and the public..
Pros
Innovative, caring, ambitious, collborative
Cons
fast pace, some spiteful people, constant change in procedures and politicians

Electrician (Current Employee) –  Portland, ORSeptember 11, 2017
It's a good place to work. My current manager is one of the best I have had in my career. The work is varied and interesting as are the people. Promotion is only possible when someone retires or a new position is funded.
Pros
Regular work week in week out
Cons
Same people for years and years.

Zoning Inspector (Former Employee) –  Portland, ORJuly 30, 2017
I worked there and began to enjoy the job once I started working as a Zoning inspector. The work was interesting and it was easy to meet people in the community and give them information about how the city works and where to take their complaints for resolution. I enjoyed researching information about properties and coordinating efforts with other departments and employees to get compliance with city codes.

Sr. Dispatcher (Former Employee) –  Portland, OregonMay 22, 2017
Loved the work. Spent 17 years there when the average years spent is 5 years. The environment was brutal and hours very difficult and managers never did the job again once they promoted. Hardest part of the job when someone dies on the phone with you and best part of the job is saving lives in the public domain and emergency services personnel such as firefighters, policemen and paramedics. I loved it.
Pros
Benefits, 10 hour days, saving lives, making a difference.
Cons
Hostile work environment and my duties as a Union Shop Steward

Director of Operations/ Custodial (Former Employee) –  Portland, MEApril 29, 2017
Very busy and lots of variety on the waterfront. Many bars, restaurants and events all over town. Don't care much about the traffic flow. Stop signs/ one way streets.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator (Current Employee) –  Portland, TXMarch 26, 2017
As with any work place Portland has its ups and downs. They take the time to appreciate their employees. The city is a reactive rather than proactive in their maintenance, but that is most places as i have come to find out. If you need time off they will work with you as best they can to accommodate your needs. Portland's stand by is a one weekend a month or more often if you are willing to work more.
Pros
time off as needed
Cons
few breaks, Stand by

Parking Code Enforcement Officer (Current Employee) –  Portland, ORJanuary 8, 2017
The City of Portland provides an excellent benefits package, but that's about it. Management does not care about my concerns or suggestions. Working with the public is stressful because people are insulting and sometimes physically hostile. Working outside is difficult in extreme cold, heat, and torrential rain.
Pros
benefits (health insurance, holidays, retirement)
Cons
poor management, hostile public, bad weather
