A typical day
Benefits Specialist (Former Employee) –  Portsmouth, VAApril 26, 2017
A typical day is sent with answering phones, training calls, meeting dead lines and scanning documents in system. You have about a 800 case load per Eligibility Worker. The hardest part is trying to keep up with the case load. Meeting some of the clients and making new friends.
Pros
the benefits
Cons
large case load

Depending on the department, the City of Portsmouth can be a difficult or enjoyable place to work.
Clerk (Former Employee) –  Portsmouth, VAApril 18, 2017
Depending on the department, the City of Portsmouth can be a difficult or enjoyable place to work. The department of Social Services is a high stress environment, with enormous responsibilities to the public. There is no room for advancement within a specific position, and there are no raises. In order to advance with the city, you must apply for alternate positions, and generally, those positions have no relation to your current position. The city has a high turn over rate, and I experienced extreme disorganization, lack of communication and quite often, you do not have the tools or ressources to do your job effectively. It can be a very rewarding place to work through public service.
Pros
Benefits, City paid Life Insurance, State Retirement Plan
Cons
Lack of organization, resources and communication

A challenging environment, but made better by excellent work colleagues. Hardest part of job was understanding the politics of every action. Most enjoyable was job satisfaction received by being able to initiate positive changes and projects.
