An Excellent Place to Grow and Gain Fundamental Skills
Management Intern (Former Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAJuly 21, 2017
Planning and Building Agency

Overall, the people are very friendly, and intelligent, and the work is fairly straightforward, while tedious at times. This is a great agency to gain some essential skills, and to potentially make a lasting impact on the surrounding community.

A great place to work.
Senior Water System Operator (Former Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAJune 20, 2016
They have a great Water System, and the work is so unpredictable, that you have no time to get Bored with the job. You start the day with updates from the standby person with the problems that you have in the System after Hours. Include on the schedule work that you have for the day the emergency repairs, if any, assign the work, make sure the operators have access to the tool and material needed, and the safety equipment needed. All electrical work will be done by two person, always have a back up. For Confined Space entry, make sure that you have 3 Certified operators, and all the equipment necessary. I have learn a lot on the job, like PLC, MCC Troubleshooting, Supervisory skills and Excel and Word for reporting. Most of the coworkers are willing to do what ever it takes to do their job. I really enjoy this job, and i can not point to a part of the job that was hard. I took a lot of pride on adjusting the settings to see the minimum variations of pressure on the system, to be sure that I have back up to back up, in case something failed.
To come back from a long weekend, and hear that there were no failures on the system, that was the most enjoyable part of the job.
Pros
Free education, seminars.
Cons
Personal Change.

Workers Compensation Claims Examiner (Current Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAFebruary 26, 2016
A great opportunity to learn city government laws and protocols and how they are applied to city employees. Days are dynamic, and fast paced with decisions needing to be made quickly. Continuous learning opportunities in how state laws are applied in medical treatment and workers compensation benefits. Department team work is critical to ensure all benefit aspects are met within State Law timelines. The hardest part of the job is making decisions on unique situations of injured city workers where sound judgment and State Laws need to applied. The most enjoyable part of the day is working directly with different City Employees and helping them obtain their benefits that can get them back to work.
Pros
Great learning opportunity.
Cons
Need to hit the ground running.

Business License Inspector/Collector (Former Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAFebruary 1, 2016
Helping the local businesses with their licensing needs has given me the opportunity to work with many different and unique needs that a growing company requires. Good listening skills, time management and some compassion has been critical in helping small businesses succeed and helping them know the avenues to go to for additional help (ie. Small Business Administration, Chamber of Commerce, Redevelopment Agency). Good staffing that work together when out in the field to answer phone in questions & problems has helped make this position effective. Management is somewhat out of touch with the businesses needs and focuses for on government issues that are not always the most effective process to this local agency. The hardest part has been not having management working with the employees and the constituents more and causing more hardship on these same people through lack of contact with the public.
Pros
good benefits & retirement packages
Cons
low concern for local business's & their needs

Clerk (Current Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAJanuary 27, 2016
The Staff at the City of Santa ana Library are pretty Friendly, unfortunately, unless you are a full time staff they won't give you benefits and to be a full time staff is near imposible.

PROPERTY MANAGER OF SARTC (Former Employee) –  Santa Ana, CANovember 19, 2015
I was left alone to manage the SARTC, the Santa Ana Regional Transportation Center with over 3,000 passengers using the facility on a daily basis. The people working at the train station were the best and made it worth staying on the job. Government PC was ever present and difficult to deal with. I truly enjoyed bringing the SARTC up to a high standard as it is a beautiful building worth saving. It was only a temporary job for 999 hours. I miss working there from a stand point of the people and what the building stands for.
Pros
I love property maintenance
Cons
Working for a governamental agency.

Understanding Seniors
CA-Program Coordinator (Current Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAOctober 14, 2015
I've learned to be patient and listen...
Working with seniors you learn to listen and be patient. I enjoy working with them, the hardest part is hearing one of them has passed away. Once a month we would have parties to celebrate holidays or special occasions, they are so much fun to watch them dance and laugh..
Pros
Free lunch
Cons
Not enough time

Little room for growth. Rarely are there opportunities to work extra hours. Once you reach max level of your position, your pay rate is capped out.

Incompetent management and corrupt City Council
Former Community Development/Planning employee (Former Employee) –  Santa Ana, CAJune 12, 2015
You will not get a chance to make a difference. While the City's population mostly struggles, the City leadership spends the money enriching their friends. One of the City Council members does not even live in the City.
Pros
Working downtown with all the good restaurants
Cons
City leadership and management is looting the City for personal gain
