Cognella, Inc. is a 60-person, rapidly growing, entrepreneurial, higher education publishing company located in San Diego, CA. We work with professors, authors, and editors all over the country to develop titles (in both print and digital formats) in a broad range of disciplines. We are looking for strong product sponsoring acquisitions editors in selected disciplines to acquire new titles for local and national markets. This is a highly stimulating, academically oriented sales position, where creativity, subject matter knowledge, and tenacity are all equally needed.
We are currently filling positions for part-time Acquisitions Editors to work from their own home office (or from our San Diego office if locally based) for approximately 15-20 hours per week.This is an incredible opportunity for the right individual who would enjoy communicating with professors on the phone in his or her discipline, while helping revolutionize the traditional academic publishing space.
Under the general supervision of the Vice President of Acquisitions and Sales, the Specialist Acquisitions Editor is responsible for acquiring new titles. This position is responsible for all phases of the publishing agreement process from researching courses, subjects, topics, and readings, to establishing contact with potential authors and editors, to securing and signing the final publishing agreement. The Specialist Acquisitions Editor is also responsible for supporting the author in creating a work that meets his/her needs within Cognella specifications. This position is responsible for reaching new signing goals by generating new business, and is instrumental in helping grow the Cognella brand through outreach. Each part-time Specialist Acquisitions Editor is expected to sign a minimum of 2 new projects per month.
What we're looking for in the ideal candidates:
Highly motivated, goal driven individuals with exceptional communication, as well as presentation skills, and expert understanding of their particular discipline including courses, topics, readings and resources. Outgoing individuals with an appreciation for excellence and innovation, who thrive in a fast-paced and creative environment.
Current PhD, postdoctoral scholar, PhD student, or equivalent education and experience in one or more of the following discipline areas:
- Business/Management (broad business curriculum background)
- Communication/Media Studies
- Political Science
- Any academic combination of these disciplines
Strong understanding of assigned discipline, including courses, topics, and readings
Some sales or business/organizational experience preferred (but will consider any candidate with the right raw skills, including the “fire-in-the-belly” to succeed)
Must be comfortable navigating a customer database and similar software applications
Proven ability to consistently meet or exceed deadlines and goals
Must be a self-starter with initiative to work independently and possess exceptional problem solving skills
Must have the ability to develop and maintain strong and positive relationships with clients
Proven ability to work cohesively with a variety of clients and demonstrated outstanding customer service skills
Professional demeanor along with superior verbal and written communication skills
Thorough understanding of English grammar and some experience with editorial processes
Fundamental understanding of publishing acquisitions, project targeting, and author development
Exceptional organizational skills with proven ability to prioritize daily operations and long-term projects in order to meet deadlines, ensure efficient workflow, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously
Ability to work well under pressure and multi-task effectively
Superb attention to detail
Must be able to work effectively and productively both independently and with a wide variety of people in an environment of rapidly changing deadlines and priorities
Highly proficient using computer and office applications
Pay includes a combination of hourly, short-term signing incentives, and longer term commission payments on list gross profits. Expected compensation at goal will be approximately $30/hour.
