Working at Commerce Bank

  • MRClueuin in Brooklyn, New York 33 months ago
i have been a CSR at commerce for over a year now. i'll give u the Pros and Cons. i applied online like everyone else and got a call back on a saturday by HR. I had no banking experience but did have customer service experience. PROs - unlike other banks you are not required to sell products. there is no goals to meet. (but due to the fact commerce has been bought by TD this might change in the future) - The starting pay is good compare to Wamu and other banks - Work hours are good for students who are going to school and working. They try to set your schedule around yours. And the fact that they are open 7 days does help - commerce has a good benifits for 40 and some 30 hours employees - you can actually take training classes at commerce to "move up". example: lending classes which you can take and be licensed to get a job somewhere else or be a ceritified lender at commerce. - you can get overtime by helping out a grand openings or even at other branches. - up to 28 PTOs per years. CONS - Working hours are kinda hard (due to the fact that its open 7 days) - only have 4 closed holidays. - you get a raise every 6 months. which is no more the .25 cent. - Uncertain about the direction which the bank will go due to TD buying out commerce. - penny arcade is a horrible machine which must be attended to every so often. - No steady hours. schedules change every other week or so. i'm pretty happy working for commerce, not as a career, but as a job. Tellers do have to wear a vest and CSRs have to wear a suit. you can have a beard or facial hair. But keep in mind this is a professional work setting, you should look professional. Tellers do have to be friendly but not to the extend where it makes someone sick. Commerce culture is a friendly service. like any job i woke up many times wanting to look for a new job. if you guys have any question feel free to ask!

I started working a commerce in the summer of 2007 at the Jenkintown PA branch. When it came for me to go back to school, I had to make arrangements for commerce to change my schedule. I worked thu, fri, sat, sun. and never complained once about working every single weekend. The branch manager, suggested I work one weekend a month. Which was less then what I suggested but it was fine. TO make a long story short by my three weekend (3 months later). The manager called the branch around 11 am saturday morning, saying I was supposed to open instead of coming in at 8. When I told him I never opened and I had no training to do so, he ignored me and proceeded to tell me if I didn't write a letter saying I quit and signed my name, he was going to ruin my life and make sure I can't ever get a job at a bank again. WELL I did as he said since a threat from a large man saying he is going to ruin my life and having access to my account information I wasn't going to take his threat lightly. To conclude, my 8 months working there was filled with low pay, poor management, high turnover rate and very risky robberies (robbed at least once a month). The management did very illegal things and when I contacted HR on management being involved with fraudulent activity they did nothing. Commerce is a bad company to work for and I think the best part about it was I was making 11/hr with no bonus or commission. Do you know who got the bonus at the end of the year if we did well? The manager!

Every business has its own style. What is the office environment and culture like at Commerce Bank? Are people dressed in business casual, jeans and t-shirts, or full-on suits? Do folks get together for Friday happy hours and friendly get-togethers? What is a typical day in the life of an employee at Commerce Bank?

It's always hard to know what to expect when going in for that interview -- and preparation can make all the difference. What is the interview process like at Commerce Bank? Any advice on striking the right note?
