About Cook Children's Healthcare

From the tiniest babies to the gangliest teens, Cook Children's Health Care System takes care of children of all ages through more than 60 pediatric medical and specialty clinics in Texas. It encompasses the Cook Children's Medical Center (with roughly 300 beds), Cook Children's Home Health, and Cook Children's Health Plan. In addition, its physician – more... network has offices at dozens of locations in Denton, Hood, Johnson, Parker, Tarrant, and Wise counties. Specialties include behavioral health services, bone marrow transplants, craniofacial reconstruction, oncology, and dialysis. Cook's Life After Cancer Program is funded by the Lance Armstrong Foundation and helps people manage and survive cancer.

Operations

One of the largest employers in Fort Worth, the system's specialty care centers also dot the map in a sizable area north, west, and south of the city. In addition, there are a few in far-flung parts of the state, mainly in West Texas.

Strategy

The latest large facility the system opened is one for urgent care in suburban Southlake, which debuted in spring 2011. It specializes in treating unscheduled minor emergencies and providing pediatric attention in areas such as orthopedics and endocrinology. At the same time, Cook's Children has opened several inner-city neighborhood clinics that focus on treatment for children of indigent and underserved families. Cook Children's Health Care System in early 2012 established Cook Children's Health Services Inc., a for profit company designed to help doctors administer quality health care at affordable prices.

Company Background

The forebears of the system reach back to 1918 and the creation of the Fort Worth Free Baby Hospital, whose offshoot merged in 1985 with Cook Children's Hospital (founded 1929) to become the Cook Children's Medical Center. The present name took hold in 1995 as the hospital expanded to include additional facilities, a health plan, and a network of doctors. – less
