A dangerous, trecherous and corrupt environment
other staff (Former Employee) –  Lompoc, CAJune 23, 2017
A typical day includes conflicting and ever-changing orders, priorities and directives from Behavioral Health Management which leaves competent employees bewildered and befuddled while incompetents and laziness rule supreme.
Pay is good, Union is bad. Benefits are good, support is poor.
The culture, even after changes and new names remain the 30+ year old little fiefdoms that keep effective service from those who need it the most.
The hardest part of the job is negotiating incompetent leadership and corrupt leadership while delivering great service and value to the community served. It is a daily sitcom of incompetence where the cream does not rise to the top often enough as the scum keeps the cream from the surface.
The most enjoyable part is the positive relationships created and circumventing the incompetent and lazy.
Pros
Making valuable contributions and positively effecting lives.
Cons
Working for lazy and corrupt people whose mission is to avoid detection

Treasurer/Tax Collector Deputy (Former Employee) –  Santa Barbara, CAMarch 9, 2017
Great job, the area is beautiful. The job has many great advantages but the cost of living is very high. 2 bedroom houses can run 1 million so unless you have money, it is almost impossible to live there.

HPWS facility once upon a time
County Safety Officer (Current Employee) –  Santa Barbara, CAApril 21, 2016
Started out as a cheese and whey plant and eventually incorporated another dairy facility to add cottage cheese and sour cream. Challenging and very innovated facility. Been a while since I have been there so there may have been more changes since I have been gone.

Administrative Assistant to a group of Clinicians (Former Employee) –  Santa Barbara, CAOctober 22, 2015
I liked temping for the ACT Team. Most of the people I worked with were professional, while others were not. Management was dedicated, and a little stressed. The hardest part of the position was not having all of the tools needed to do the job. The most enjoyable part was a very few co-workers who could be disagreeable when management were out of the office.
Pros
Interesting work
Cons
Not enough hours in the day.

Pharmacy Tech (Current Employee) –  Santa Barbara, CAFebruary 2, 2015
I have worked here for 11 years. The management is horrible and the Pharmacy Director is ALWAYS negative about something her employees do weather its good or bad. She never compliments her employees and even when something is done right she finds the negative in it. She always has to be right and even when her employees suggest something she never ever listens.... Its her way or the highway. She is terrible to work for.

IT Project Manager (Former Employee) –  Santa Barbara, CAOctober 16, 2013
If you are seeking a place to settle down, enjoy bureaucratic work environment. The County is best suited for individuals who are OK with the administrative structure that clearly defines boundaries. If you are creative and are looking for an innovative work environment then you may not fit.
Pros
Given opportunity to grow.
Cons
bureaucratic work environment

The top executives were all great managers -- visionary, motivating, giving good direction without micro-managing, and allowing staff to grow and move up.
