Not cowed by competition from bigger transportation companies, Cowan Systems provides truckload freight transportation, primarily in the eastern half of the US. The company's coverage area includes the mid-Atlantic states, the Midwest, New England, and the southeastern US. Cowan has about 1,400 tractors and 2,600 trailers and its largest customer is Coca-Cola Enterprises. The company arranges the transportation of freight through its logistics unit. Other offerings include ground transportation of airfreight between airports and dedicated contract carriage, in which drivers and equipment are assigned to a customer long-term. Cowan Systems has its roots in a trucking company that was founded in 1924.
Faced with historically low demand for freight shipping in 2009, Cowan stepped on the gas in adding new customers. Cowan beat out rival Schneider National to transport bottles to Costco for Huish Detergents.
Cowan's other new customers include Poland Springs, a division of Nestlé Waters, and Southeastern Container. Cowan also inked a contract bolstering its warehousing business with Satellite Logistics to pick up 2,000 truckloads of empty Heineken beer kegs from various Heineken wholesalers on the US Eastern Seaboard for delivery to Cowan's warehouse in Baltimore. The kegs will be loaded into steamship containers for export from the Port of Baltimore. – less
