DevOps Engineer

Company Overview:
Sympoz, Inc. (powered by Craftsy.com) is a Denver-based start-up at the intersection of online education, social communities, and e-commerce. We produce HD-quality classes in quilting, sewing, knitting, cake decorating, and more. The Craftsy platform enables passionate crafters around the world to learn from expert instructors anywhere, any time and to easily interact with instructors and classmates as they do. Learn it, make it, and even share it on Craftsy.com, by posting projects for inspiration and feedback or selling in our free-to-list indie patterns marketplace. Just over a year old, with 95 classes and over one million users, Craftsy is already a leader in the social crafting space and there’s so much more to come!

Sympoz, was founded in May 2010 by an experienced executive team from eBay, Yahoo, and ServiceMagic. The leadership is strong, and supports every employee in building and moving the company forward each day. We learn on the fly, and respond quickly to user feedback and ideas. The office is fast-paced and fluid, with the long hours start-ups are known for. But we like to have fun, too: like any good start-up, there are video games, rock concerts, and bottomless snacks.

Job Description:

Craftsy is looking for a highly skilled and motivated engineer to join our rapidly growing startup. This engineer will report to the Director of Technical Operations and play a key role in developing and supporting the cloud based infrastructure that runs our business. The DevOps Engineer is responsible for system and network administration, software configuration and release management, and system tools programming to support all facets of the development and operations teams.

Requirements and things you’ll use every day:

AWS, git, puppet, apache, tomcat, postgres, nginx, perl/php/ruby/bash/python/java, configuration management, jenkins, ssl, nagios, mysql, linux, and a sense of humor equal to your sense of dedication.

About you:

-You cannot imagine a world without Puppet or Chef.
-You habla EC2 EBS ELB S3 and AMI (or are dying to learn).
-You’ve been a successful linux systems admin for at least (seconds since the epoch / (total number of tcp sockets * (captain crunch’s number * 2))) years.
-You’ve been involved in the software release process before, and have some great ideas on how to make it better.
-You’ve setup a repository, and are conversant in git.
-You use the best tool for the job, but weigh things like code maintainability and management before choosing ruby.

What you’ll do:

-Setup and teardown EC2 environments for development, experiments, production, fun and occasionally profit.
-Work with the team to own and maintain the production infrastructure - patches, backups, upgrades, AMI’s, and security.
-Daily interaction with developers and participation in the development process.
-Manage the software release process, and improve on what we’ve built with your own insight.
-Allow data, not instinct, tea leaves, hearsay or blog posts to guide your decisions.
-Participate in on-call, and share in off-hours maintenance work.
-Continuously iterate and improve the systems you own.

The successful applicant will complete this exercise : monitor i/o access to a disk, gather block writes/second on a per-second interval for 75 seconds. Generate write load by creating a 1Gb file. Provide simple output that lists the min and maximum transfer achieved during your test. Show your work in your cover letter.
