Job Description:

Craftsy is looking for a highly skilled and motivated engineer to join our rapidly growing startup. This engineer will report to the Director of Technical Operations and play a key role in developing and supporting the cloud based infrastructure that runs our business. The DevOps Engineer is responsible for system and network administration, software configuration and release management, and system tools programming to support all facets of the development and operations teams.

Requirements and things you’ll use every day:

AWS, git, puppet, apache, tomcat, postgres, nginx, perl/php/ruby/bash/python/java, configuration management, jenkins, ssl, nagios, mysql, linux, and a sense of humor equal to your sense of dedication.

About you:

-You cannot imagine a world without Puppet or Chef.
-You habla EC2 EBS ELB S3 and AMI (or are dying to learn).
-You’ve been a successful linux systems admin for at least (seconds since the epoch / (total number of tcp sockets * (captain crunch’s number * 2))) years.
-You’ve been involved in the software release process before, and have some great ideas on how to make it better.
-You’ve setup a repository, and are conversant in git.
-You use the best tool for the job, but weigh things like code maintainability and management before choosing ruby.

What you’ll do:

-Setup and teardown EC2 environments for development, experiments, production, fun and occasionally profit.
-Work with the team to own and maintain the production infrastructure - patches, backups, upgrades, AMI’s, and security.
-Daily interaction with developers and participation in the development process.
-Manage the software release process, and improve on what we’ve built with your own insight.
-Allow data, not instinct, tea leaves, hearsay or blog posts to guide your decisions.
-Participate in on-call, and share in off-hours maintenance work.
-Continuously iterate and improve the systems you own.

The successful applicant will complete this exercise : monitor i/o access to a disk, gather block writes/second on a per-second interval for 75 seconds. Generate write load by creating a 1Gb file. Provide simple output that lists the min and maximum transfer achieved during your test. Show your work in your cover letter.
