Holding company Crete Carrier Corporation's flagship business, Crete Carrier, provides dry van truckload freight transportation services in the 48 contiguous states. It operates from some two dozen terminals, mainly in the mid-western and southeastern US. The company's Shaffer Trucking unit transports temperature-controlled cargo, and Hunt Transportation – more... (no relation to J.B. Hunt Transport Services) hauls heavy equipment and other cargo on flatbed trailers. Overall, the companies operate more than 5,300 tractors and more than 12,400 trailers. Family-owned Crete Carrier was founded in 1966 by chairman Duane Acklie; president and CEO Tonn Ostergard is his son-in-law.
Among its expansion initiatives, in late 2010 the company opened a new $10 million trucking terminal, neighboring Knoxville, Tennessee, off Interstate 40. The 26-acre site boasts an office and driver center, tractor/trail shop, technician lounge and training room, and space for parking hundreds of trucks. Crete's local customer base has included kingpins Kimberly Clark and Bush Brother & Co.
