CSG Systems International tries to make life a little easier for CSRs (customer service representatives). Its customer care and billing software and services are designed for clients handling a high volume of transactions. The company offers outsourced transaction processing and customer service systems that are used to establish customer accounts, process orders, manage and mail monthly statements, and perform marketing analysis, among other functions. The company serves primarily North American cable TV, direct broadcast satellite, online services, and telecom companies such as AT&T, Time Warner, Comcast, and Verizon.
CSG has some three dozen offices in about 25 countries, although most of its sales (about 85%) are generated in the US. The company is seeing strong growth in its European and Asian operations, however, as those regions grew nearly 1000% and 2000%, respectively, year-over-year.
Sales and Marketing
CSG markets its products directly via dedicated account teams. Its largest customers include Comcast (nearly 20% of sales), DISH Network (13%), and Time Warner (10%).
CSG has seen substantial revenue growth since 2005. In 2011 it reported a nearly 35% jump in sales to $735 million, almost entirely the result of the acquisition of UK business services software provider Intec, which boosted the company's software and maintenance segment by about 300%. Along with the strong 2011 sales, net income nearly doubled to $42 million.
Mergers and Acquisitions
CSG uses acquisitions as one means of expanding. In 2012 it acquired Swedish software developer Ascade, a provider of trading and routing applications to telecommunications companies worldwide, for approximately $19 million in cash to extend its reach into the wholesale telecommunications wholesale market and expand its geographic reach.
In 2010 the company bought Intec Telecom, a UK-based business support systems software provider, in a deal valued at about $376 million. CSG used the purchase to expand its customer base into international markets and broaden its portfolio of products used to interact with customers in real-time. By integrating Intec's retail billing, mediation, and wholesale business management systems with its customer interaction management software suite, CSG was able to provide a more complete customer interaction platform to telecommunications companies outside of its core cable and satellite markets. – less
