Position: DES is a specialized drilling company that focuses on scientific projects worldwide. DES has been awarded a contract to conceptualize and design a new type of drill rig capable of drilling quickly through up to 10,000' of ice and then the underlying bedrock in Antarctica. The design phase is the first of more steps to follow: building, testing, and operating. The position will report to the project team leader.
Qualifications: The Mechanical Design Engineer will put his creative and organized energy into this very exciting project as a full time participant of the design team. He/she will be a critical part of creating this unique new system. The project is divided in 3 phases: conceptual design, preliminary design and final/fabrication design. The position is expected to join the team during the conceptual design phase (April). The timely delivery of documents is key to continued funding for the project.
Experience: The candidate must have at least 5 years of engineer experience with a focus on designing new systems as part of a small team. A demonstrable track record in project management is required. Previous experience with drilling equipment design and/or extreme cold climate operations are major advantages for the candidate. Extensive experience with AutoCAD software is required.
Education: A degree in Mechanical Engineering with PE is required.
Specific Responsibilities: The MDE is responsible for designing the components of the drilling system. He/she will be part of the decision process to create the new equipment systems. He/she will produce a preliminary report and detailed plans and specifications to allow for competitive bidding of the fabrication. The role will involve value engineering of the different systems to develop. This position includes communications with many stakeholders geographically dispersed.
