Churning out dairy foods since 1918, Darigold is the processing and marketing subsidiary of the Northwest Dairy Association (NDA). With 12 processing plants and more than 500 member/farmers, Darigold makes and distributes fluid milk, butter, cottage cheese, yogurt, and other cultured dairy products under both private labels and the Darigold brand name. Seattle-based Darigold offers its products to wholesale and retail food companies, as well as foodservice operators; however most of its sales are generated from selling dairy ingredients to other food manufacturers. Albertsons, Fred Meyer, and Safeway are among its retail customers. In 2010 NDA added Montana's Country Classic Dairies to the Darigold fold.
NDA's purchase of Country Classic increases Darigold's footprint in the Northwestern US. Its operations were absorbed into Darigold's network, and its Bozeman, Montana, facility churns out Darigold-branded products. Country Classic's 30 member/farmers became part of NDA, adding about 160 million pounds of milk a year (more than half of Montana's milk supply) to the co-op's total production. NDA and Country Classic's union was the culmination of a longtime working relationship; years ago, Country Classic used the Darigold name to market its products.
Darigold, which in 2006 retired its dba name WestFarm Foods, boasts production plants in Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Washington. It owns and operates the largest butter churn in the US that produces more than 28,000 pounds of butter every hour.
