According to The Sheridan Group, it's printing that is mightier than the sword. Through its six specialized printing businesses, The Sheridan Group prints books, catalogs, journals, and magazines. Its Sheridan Press and Dartmouth Journal Services units print short- and medium-run scholarly and technical journals. The Dingley Press prints catalogs, while Sheridan Books manufactures and distributes custom books, and United Litho and Dartmouth Printing specialize in magazine, journal, and catalog printing. Customers include publishers, university presses, associations, and catalog retailers. The group was founded in 1988; its original company, Sheridan Press, began operations in 1915.
The company's operations are concentrated in the Northeast, with locations in Maine, Michigan, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Virginia. In 2011 The Sheridan Group consolidated the printing operations of United Litho in Ashburn, Virginia into Dartmouth Printing Company in Hanover, New Hampshire in order to cut costs and increase efficiencies. Sales and customer service staff continue to operate in Ashburn.
Along with the rest of the printing and publishing world, The Sheridan Group has recently taken steps to boost its digital operations by investing in new technologies across its businesses. In 2011 Sheridan Press launched Sheridan Digital Select, an online interface for publishers ordering digitally-produced bound publications, while Sheridan Books introduced ShelfWise, a new eBook retail site. On the mobile front, in 2011 the company launched a suite of products designed to help customers distribute their content through mobile channels, including providing mobile alerts to article abstracts and full-text article content. – less
