About DELTA DENTAL

Delta Dental of California doesn't just help keep the mouths of movie stars clean. The not-for-profit company is a member of the Delta Dental Plans Association (DDPA) and has affiliates nationwide. Delta Dental of California provides dental coverage for individuals and groups through HMOs, preferred provider plans (PPOs), and such government programs – more... as the TRICARE Retiree Dental Program and California's Denti-Cal (Medicaid) program. The company serves more than 18 million enrollees in California; its programs cover more than one-third of California residents. It also provides dental benefits administration support to employers.

Geographic Reach

Delta Dental of California has offices in Cerritos, Fresno, Sacramento, and San Diego, California.

Operations

Delta Dental of California is part of a holding company organization (known simply as the "Enterprise") with several other Delta Dental members including Delta Dental of Pennsylvania, Delta Dental New York, and Delta Dental Insurance Company. Together the affiliated Enterprise companies serve 26 million members in some 15 states across the US; the companies work together by sharing administrative and back-office resources. (The broader Delta Dental Plans Association network consists of independent licensees covering some 56 million people nationwide.) Originally founded in 1955, Delta Dental of California has been part of this enterprise organization since 2000.

Sales and Marketing

Promotional efforts help Delta Dental of California add new group benefit clients each year. In 2011 it added customers including Avery Dennison, Rite Aid, and Reliance Steel, as well as institutions such as the California Ironworkers Association and the Pharr-San Juan-Alamo ISD.

Financial Performance

Delta Dental of California and its affiliated Enterprise companies have reported increasing revenues over the last few years, including a 7% rise to some $6.7 billion in 2011 (up from $6.3 billion in 2010 and $6.2 billion in 2009).

Strategy

The combined Enterprise organization of Delta Dental affiliates is working to increase operational efficiencies and reduce administrative costs, while improving services to clients and members and expanding its customer base. The group is especially working on information technology enhancements, such as new claims processing and customer service systems, and such efforts are increasingly important as federal health reform measures work to reduce medical spending in the US. To help control member expenses, the organization launched a SmileWay wellness program to encourage preventative dental care in 2011.

Delta Dental of California and its affiliates are also working to provide more affordable dental coverage options to their low-income customer set, especially in the California market. In 2009 the company launched several DeltaCare USA HMO plans to increase its low-cost offerings. Delta Dental of California and its affiliates launched a community outreach program to provide preventative care services to low-income Hispanics in 2010. The companies also expanded outside the US border in 2010 by forming an affiliate to provide dental health coverage in Mexico; the venture successfully enrolled more than 400,000 dental members in 2011. – less
