The EMR Application Specialist is responsible to facilitate the use and continuous improvement of the EMR and related software programs in order to maximize the effectiveness of the system. This position will oversee all activities related to the electronic health record including support, upgrades, user acceptance, testing, documentation, implementation, and training. In addition, the EMR Specialist will ensure the organization’s compliance with Meaningful Use, HIPAA, and other regulatory guidelines.
1. EMR Work Flow Design and Project Management
-Works collaboratively with physicians, managers, and staff to identify and redesign areas for improvement in EMR process and workflow.
-Uses project management skills to execute EMR enhancements and problem solving and critical thinking skills to develop solutions to identified problems.
-Provide ongoing building and development of the EMR to meet clinical documentation needs.
-Understands the requirements for PQRS and Meaningful Use attestation; generates and submits reports and works with providers and assistants to monitor compliance.
-Performs testing of system changes and upgrades prior to roll out.
2. System Security and Risk Management
-Oversee electronic security audits to ensure HIPAA and other regulations are being met.
-Identify, develop and update policies and procedures related to security and serve as a resource.
-Develop and implement security audit plans as required to achieve Meaningful Use.
3. User Training and Support
-Develops and supports user training programs for EMR and other software applications.
-Create policies and procedures for EMR processes and work flow redesign.
-Conducts training and orientation for new users and provides tools and resources to all users.
-Ensures that all users are made aware of and trained on the use of new applications.
-Assess user hardware and software proficiency and identify training needs.
-Obtain data from the system; create reports in collaboration with physicians and administration.
4. Vendor Relations
-Develops and maintains constructive and professional relationships with vendors, consultants, and managed IT services needed to further the IT strategy.
Education: Associates Degree in Business or Computer Science.
Experience: Minimum of 5 years working with technology in a healthcare setting with at least two years of experience with EMR. Clinical background desired.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
-Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects to completion.
-Knowledge of major programming and operating systems.
-Skill in development application capabilities required in database, spreadsheet, and word processing.
-Ability to explain, both orally and in writing, technical topics in a clear and simple manner.
-Exercise professionalism when interacting with physicians, staff, and vendors, and customers.
