Typical day at work
Cashier/Salesman/Greeter (Former Employee), Pembroke Pines, FL – January 14, 2013
Pros: we worked as a team, managers treated us to lunch every now and then, in return the employees did the same.
Cons: short breaks
My job consisted of helping customers find what they need and make them feel comfortable about the clothes they need were buying, dressing bust forms, organizing and cleaning the store after closing.I learned how to be more confident in my speech and that customers genuinely enjoyed my services. No part of the job was really too hard, if you put effort – more... into what you're doing. Talking to customers and seeing what they were looking for and building a bond with my returning customers is what I loved the most about my job. – less

Not a lot of fluxuality
Interviewer (Former Employee), Twin Falls, Idaho – January 4, 2012
Pros: nicely balanced breaks
The floor managers are all pretty pleasent people, easy to work with, and friendly. The job itself was easy and rewarding as well. However when calling in for work the programming wasn't ever what it was supposed to be so it was really inconvenient to have to go in twenty minutes early to find out if I had to work or not.

Discovery has offerred me 19 different job functions in the 17 and a bit years I have been there in three different industries.
Team Leader The Destiny Provident Fund (Current Employee), Finance – March 27, 2013
Pros: doing something i am passionate about every day.
Cons: work, life balance is hard to get right due to long hours required. but i manage.
Various job functions required different working requirements. At work from 07h00 until 16h00. I do not take lunch. My reporting functions are the first thing done in the morning, followed by elevated queries. Then onto creating operational data reports and requirements for various areas in the fund, Meetings occur normally between 10h00 and 15h00 and – more... cover a range of issues from operational, to auditing, to training of staff.
My management is supportive and do use their influence to assist in driving projects.
Hardest part of the job is dealing with staff related issues, especially on non-performance. But that is part of the job. The most enjoyable part of the job is in guiding the team to reach there goals and resolving an elevated query favourably. (Ensuring the best is done, to the letter of the law and communicating that in a clear and concise manner.) – less

Discovery is a very fast paced dynamic company
Team Leader (Current Employee), Sandton – February 27, 2013
Pros: dyanmic company with lots of room to grow
Cons: highly pressurised, have to work unitl 12 midnight on the 25th of the month
We work according to service level agreements. I have three hours to answer a query and email once received. I have one hour to respond to an escalation both internal and external. I am constantly pushing cases through the system to ensure that the service level agreements are kept within each department that the applicatoins fall into. I also have – more... to give detialed feedback to my manager if there are problems on cases – less

Challenging mental, physical and emotional demands characterize the work
LONDON VERBATIM REPORTING, Reporter for Discovery (Former Employee), London, ON – December 27, 2012
Pros: unique exposure to fascinasting legal process of examination for discovery
Cons: considered self-employed with no benefits, deductions, guarantee of hours
Upon arrival I set up my room with digital recording equipment to record the sworn testimony for Discovery, and would greet and provide for the needs and comfort of lawyers and their clients. I was responsible for a complete set of notes and a listing of undertakings and refusals of undertakings, a clear digital recording, and copies of exhibits and – more... all relevant documentation.
I taught myself shorthand to ensure more complete note-taking and learned transcription using Scribe/Universal StopStart, Word Perfect (similar to Microsoft Word), and templates. I also honed my service skills in dealing with professionals and their clients in a high-pressure and often emotionally-charged environment, working under strict time constraints when taking the case and in providing the official transcript when ordered, particularly expedites.
Working for two owners was often difficult due to conflicts between them. Personalities and personal problems affected staff and set a negative tone in the office environment, and made expectations of job performance unclear and unpredictable.
Co-workers were supportive of each other and resourcefully worked together to accomplish tasks and share information and skills.
Cancellation of work was the most difficult aspect of the job and often occurred less than 24 hours before the scheduled case. Also, there was no guarantee of a minimum number of scheduled hours per week.
As a Reporter for Discovery I was able to bring all of my service experience to bear in a high-energy environment and master many new professional tasks. I truly enjoyed the multi-tasking nature of my role as "Madame Reporter," and particularly the opportunity to act as a facilitator and positively affect and improve the experience of our clients. – less

Challenging and productive workplace
Assistant Financial Advisor (Former Employee), East London – November 5, 2012
Pros: free braai
Cons: long hours
Most of the days were hectic but this turned out to be a good experience because i learnt to work under pressure and delivering good results. My workmates were supportive and goal achievers. One of the most challenging issues were meeting the agreed target in a small town like East London, above all Discovery was a fun place to be and one would carry – more... out duties without being coherced. – less

Pros: learn more of the different discovery products, learnt how to work under pressure and accurately under pressure.
Cons: compulsory overtime.
Read the daily stats update email advising how far our “pool” is in terms of being in turnaround time. Answering members emails, to meet the minimum stats required in a day.
