About Dixon Montessori Charter School
Dixon Montessori Charter School (DMCS) is a parent-founded charter school. DMCS is authorized by the Dixon Unified School District and chartered by the California State Board of Education.
The mission of DMCS is to provide a non-traditional elementary school option to local families. Maria Montessori said, "There is a part of a child's soul that – more... has always been unknown but which must be known. With a spirit of sacrifice and enthusiasm we must go in search, like those who travel to foreign lands and tear up mountains in their search for hidden gold. It is in that spirit of sacrifice and enthusiasm that families in the Dixon community created the Dixon Montessori Charter School.
What is a charter school?
California charter schools are tuition-free public schools providing instruction to students from kindergarten through 12th grade. Dixon's only charter school, DMCS, currently offers a Montessori curriculum to students grades K-7. Charter schools are typically created by a group of parents, teachers, administrators, community leaders who petition their local school board or county board of education for a charter to open an independent school in their community. DMCS enjoys support from the DUSD as well as the community and provides an option for families seeking a non-traditional educational experience for their children. Public charter schools offer an important and timely public school option to address the challenges facing the traditional education system and fulfill the demand for additional high-quality options in public education.
A new report by the independent research organization, EdSource, found that California's charter schools "significantly outperformed regular public schools" on student achievement data in 2004. EdSource also found that a significantly higher amount of charter schools met their state performance targets compared to non-charter public schools.
