The first start of vent weaning unit. Heavy patient care work load, but very satisfying to know we weaned so many and sent many home vent free.
The hardest part was call outs by fellow respiratory staff, be cause the work load was so heavy. There were days when two respiratory staff would have the vent unit, ER and medical floors to cover and delivery neb treatments, arterial blood gases would need to be drawn and ran and results given to physician. Changing out of equipment per protocol and chart auditing and orders taken and written for physicians.
I became a team leader while working there and had a great relationship with the pulmnologists. They relied upon my recommendations of weaning per patient and trusted my judgement.
The most enjoyable part was the satisfaction of helping the respiratory patient get some quality of life back after all the hard work of weaning.
