cashier/sales/customer service
Sales associate/cashier/stock/customer service (Former Employee) –  Stow, OH 44224July 21, 2017
It was nice getting to know regular customers, and being able to always know where to find items they needed help with.
The store needed a complete make over. The floors hadn't been professionally cleaned and waxed as needed. There were boxes of items that were marked down all over the store and it looked pretty unorganized and messy. There were issues with new employee's not getting trained properly and merchandise was being put in the wrong places. Also had several customers return dog food with maggots in it, so I stopped shopping there myself. A lot of the stock was not being rotated during stock, and would find quite a bit of expired food.
Pros
Co-workers and customers were very nice.
Cons
odd scheduling, a lot of call offs and always expected to come in. Expired items was at a very high level

Bottom of the food chain for a job
Cashier/Customer Service (Former Employee) –  Cape Coral, FLJuly 21, 2017
Hardly any hours per week. Store manager was involved just enough to keep her job. Minimum wage, Zero benefits. Schedule was all over the place. One day I would open, the next day I would close
Pros
Direct deposit
Cons
No perks. No atta boys. Drinking fountain did not work, so no water unless you purchased it from the shelf. Stand in one spot the entire shift.

Company who has lost it way.
District Manager (Former Employee) –  LouisianaJuly 21, 2017
Dollar General has reposition themselves to a company that is not fostering a culture that is conducive for people to growth. They have remove people as a top priority. There statement to this would be that we are growing at a rapid rate so we need people and talent, but the growth is out pacing the people and talent. The growth needs to move with the talent. The work life balance is not their. The job culture is lost being the rapid growth. Dollar General use to care about associates. We are just numbers.

Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Dothan, AL to spring hill, FlJuly 21, 2017
You are the back bone of the store when you are the store manager. I is almost like owning your own store sense you are responsible for everything. It was a great place to work and very fast paced.
Pros
You make all of your own decisions.
Cons
5 1/2 day work week.

Sales Associate (Current Employee) –  Louisburg, NCJuly 20, 2017
This company is a workhorse. Hours are constantly cut, You get a $0.25 raise every year annually. Otherwise there are no raises without Promotions... and very few promotions to be had.
Cons
short breaks, worked to the bone, few hours, little pay

Fun work Environment
Sales Lead - Part Time Key Holder (Current Employee) –  Largo, FLJuly 20, 2017
Could be a fun place to work depending on your management. Great place to learn and get your feet wet in the retail industry. Very fast paced environment with no room for breaks. DG allows 1 lunch break in a 8 hour period when other companies allow 1 to 2 breaks in between lunch. I believe employees could be far more productive if more breaks were authorized. Other than that benefits aren't the greatest but it's a basic coverage and affordable to employees. Store Managers are under compensated for the work loads and hours they have to put into their stores. With a higher salary DG can gain much better management to run their stores and require no less than an AA Degree instead of a high school diploma.
Pros
Great environment
Cons
Not enough breaks

Assistant Store Manager (Former Employee) –  Waterbury, CTJuly 20, 2017
Opened and closed store. Hours were changed every week. I started as a Cashier and became the assistant manager within a few months. The hardest part of the job was communicating with Management. The most enjoyable part was the coworkers and the regular customers.

The people are great
Sales Associate, Customer Service, Stocking (Former Employee) –  Clay City, INJuly 20, 2017
The managers and other staff are great, but corporate adds a lot of stress. Lots of turnover, they expect a very small staff to complete work that would require four times as many people

Great place, if your a customer
Part Time Customer Service Associate (Former Employee) –  Philadelphia, PAJuly 20, 2017
This company offers nothing worthwhile to any of its associates. Part time workers are not given access to any healthcare benifits or any other benifit of any kind. The corporate decides to stock stores with only part time associates and never has enough people hired to one store. This creates much more work for the associates who are in the store especially with long lines of customers when they are understaffed.
Cons
Understaffing a regular thing, no breaks for part timers

Great place for those who prefer warehouse work.
Order Picker (Former Employee) –  Indianola, MSJuly 20, 2017
The place is right off tha highway so it's easily accessible. The warehouse is big with many different areas of operation that are almost interlocked which make moving thruough the plant almost effortless.
Pros
Health care is great
Cons
Short breaks, and the warehouse is hot

It is what you would expect.
Customer Service Agent/Lead Cashier (Former Employee) –  NebraskaJuly 20, 2017
Working at Dollar General is exactly what you would expect. They get huge trucks in and don't have a warehouse, so there are boxes all over the store (ALL THE TIME). Employees are constantly putting things away and it is always a mess. You work constantly and it is just revolving and never ends. You never feel like you accomplish anything. And that is exactly like you are treated...they just want and expect more and more.

They don't offer any benefits and keep your hours just low enough so you won't qualify and just spread out enough so you won't get any overtime. They expect employees to have loyalty and help out when other employees call in...expect employees to go above and beyond but they don't offer anything in exchange.
Pros
You get to go home or wherever you want when you leave.
Cons
Nothing really...

Assistant Manager (Current Employee) –  Uriah, ALJuly 20, 2017
Dollar General is a great place to start if you are on a path to becoming anything that has to deal with Sales Associate or Store Managing. It takes time to move up but even quicker to get fired, as Dollar General does whatever they can to help bring in the right employees.
