A great culture to work in
Supply Chain Analyst (Current Employee), Midland, MI –
Dow is a very enjoyable place to work. The people are very helpful and there is an atmosphere of teamwork. Dow creates a great work/life balance and provides options to help give employees more breadth in their skills and experiences.

Overall good company...
Shift Activity Coordinator (Former Employee), Ga –
Pros: pay
Cons: bureacracy
After working for DOW for ovver 11yrs, and working my way from an enrty-level postion to a Shift activity Co-ordinator the business I work for was sold. However during the sale DOW negotiated with the buyer to maintain current pay and benefits for atleast 2yrs. Dow provides advancement opportunities for those willing to take advantage of them. In the – more...  area I was the pay is phenomenal. Only downside that I found is there is a ton of bureacracy with in the company in addition to management not wanting to make critical decision and when they do they are not consistant. – less

Crazy - letting people go and hiring off street

How can a company eliminate 900 jobs and still be hiring? Do not trust the company.

Workforce treated less important vs policies
Process Operator/Technician (Former Employee), Freeport, TX –
Pros: good salary
Cons: unfair policies and management practices
Typical day at work is wriitng safe work procedures for maintenanance to be performed and puuting equipment back in service once maitenanve performed or clearing more equipment to be tagged out for more maintenance. Making rounds and checking for maintence problems is important part of the daily routine.
I learned how to operate and maintain awide variety – more...  of equipment. I learned how to clear equipment and tag it out in safe manner and how to put it back in service once it is repaired. I learned how to respond to offline events and how to bring the plant down sfely and back to online production in a safe manner as well.
Management has too big of a turover. I have been through 4 different Production leaders and 3 difffernt Operation Leaders and abut the same number of Engineers over each section of the plant and this was was just in 7 years. The rules were always changing which lead to unfair displinary practices.
Operators work together very well despite the stress that management puts on them. The outside operators and the board operators communicate with each other about how the plant is running and keep it it runnning effciently.
The hardest part of the job is the startup following an offline event. equipmnet has to be prepared correctly and this may take some time as the equipment may have been down for a while.
The most enjoyable part of the job is working with the other operators on a day to day basis and sharing the experinces that all of us have as operators and humans as well. It is very easy to start and maintain strong friendships with the other operators – less

DO NOT WORK IN A SITE LOGISTICS BLOCK
distribution operator (Former Employee), Freeport, TX –
Pros: um......zero
Cons: everything
Unfair treatment of workers. Management walks around all day trying to start trouble just to justify their jobs. If you accept a distribution job, it doesnt matter if you are close to getting your degree because you are locked in the block for at least 2 years before they will let you go. You are just a number at this place. If you like throwing your – more...  hard earned money in the toilet and pulling the handle then join their union. They really stand behind their operators over there. My advice is to get your degree and then apply for a job in a process plant (a process plant far away from Dow Chemical). They are the lowest paying plant in this area and expect the most from their employees. – less

Poor Leadership
Process Operator (Former Employee), Deer Park, TX –
Pros: free lunches throughout the week
Cons: no leadership
To much micro management. Co-workers back stab each other to much with the new hires. They don't look out for one another as a team should. Poor training techniques for new operators coming in.

A very good company!
Consultant (through Kelly Services) (Former Employee), Piscataway, NJ –
Pros: encouraging words from staff, flexible, decent rate
Working as a contractor for Dow was one of the better jobs I've had in a long while. I found the people I worked with to be very helpful and appreciative of my contributions. I enjoyed coming to work each day, and the flexibility of allowing me to work around my personal schedule at times. I got to learn new skills from my supervisors and co-workers, – more...  who were always very nice and willing to work with some on the bumps in the road I encountered. I think the hardest part was having to leave when my project was complete. – less

Supply Chain - Detailed Production Scheduler (Former Employee), Midland, MI –
Good place to start your career, and a fine place to finish it if you chose to do so.

New organizations (BPSC) should be avoided.

Ineffective work process
Project/Maintenance Engineer (Current Employee), Deer Park, TX –
Pros: multiple plants around houston
Cons: mentioned in the review section
The work process is sound but the implementation is poor. There are a lot of reactive/fire fighting works, inefficient and gaps through out the process. It takes forever to get a job done. Management do not knowing day to day "real" issues, have no desire addressing the issues, and do not care about employees long term career development. Annual budgeting – more...  is poor. Project execution is terrible. Cost control is swinging so much and out of control. Warehouse performance is terribe. Many good engineers have been quitting their jobs. The company hired many 8-16 years of experience engineers but having zero background of chemical and refinary. And it is not surprise to see that it takes 2-3 new senior engineers just to fill in for one open position. And the negative trend keeps going. – less

Dow needs to improve on it's human resources department. People are leaving to seek other employment in droves.

Good culture, but some instability
EH&S Technician (Former Employee), Allyn's Point, CT –
Pros: excellent management tools
Cons: instability
Very much enjoyed working for the company, but opportunities for advancement became much more limited during economic crisis. Company became much less employee-centered during series of acquisitions and cutbacks.
