DSC Logistics knows the ABCs of supply chain management. The third-party logistics company manages services such as warehousing, transportation, and packaging for its customers; it also offers logistics consulting services. DSC maintains a network of logistics centers spread throughout the US. Customers have included Georgia-Pacific, Heinz, Kimberly-Clark, and Wal-Mart. DSC founder Jim McIlrath, the father of CEO Ann Drake, started the company as Dry Storage Corporation in 1960 after a former boss refused to offer dry storage along with refrigerated storage services.
In recent years DSC Logistics has looked to form partnerships as the lead logistics provider (LLP) for other companies. As an example, DSC Logistics recently signed a deal to become the LLP for Reynolds American, the US-based tobacco giant. The role requires DSC Logistics to manage Reynolds' supply chain and manage more than 10 other logistics providers. In 2010 DSC Logistics signed a similar deal with StarKist, one of the world's largest tuna suppliers.
With Wal-Mart, DSC Logistics has created what it calls MOST (Multi-vendor Optimization Strategy) in an effort to combine shipments from several vendors into one delivery. MOST consolidates less-than-truckload (LTL) orders into full truck load shipments for delivery to Wal-Mart's regional distribution centers. – less
