Its a great job to come to after a break in employment but...
SALES ASSOCIATE (Current Employee), PennsylvaniaJanuary 25, 2014
Pros: great team players, they give back to the community, potlucks on special days
Cons: can't make enough when not reaching sales goals
This company is a great entryway to get back in the workforce after a long break, but not a great reliable source of income or support. I say this because when they have their bad months in sales, it reflects on your hours and income. You will most likely need a second job working for this company just to make ends meet.

Pros: employee discount
Cons: short breaks, not getting break at an appropriate time, compensation, management, not having enough people to cover a shift
There is never really a typical work day, some days are busy other days are not. The amount of hours granted to the associates all depends on whether or not the store meets their daily goal. So if the store isn't making any money for the day they will cut peoples hours. One of the hardest things to deal with would be when we do not have enough people – more... to cover a shift. For example there will be three people for the closing shift when there really should be at least six. The pay isn't all that great and the yearly raises aren't more then a few cents. There isn't really much room to move up in the company. The way that management decides who gets a promotion is based on favoritism. If the store manager likes you and you suck up to them then you'll get promoted. They do not really go by who has the right skills just more so who they like. – less

Sales Associate (Former Employee), Glen Allen, VAJanuary 14, 2014
Pros: discount
Cons: demand
This is a great place to work if you have a passion for shoes and accessories. The managers are nice and helpful and the work environment is fun. Its a busy work shift but worth it with a great discount for employees.

Mediocre Part Time Position with Nowhere to Go
Part Time Sales Associate (Former Employee), MichiganJanuary 10, 2014
Pros: dress code is fairly lax (jeans are okay, but only certain types), employee discount is decent (30%), co-workers at my location were/are wonderful people
Cons: short breaks, poor benefit selection, very few hours during the week, no opportunity whatsoever for advancement, cameras and microphones record your every move, out of control customer theft, high pressure to sign up customers to the discount coupon program, company has its head in the sand about what they think their reputation is, employees are expected to also be the janitors/cleanup crew, typical annual raise is less than 25 cents/hour.
If you're into killing a few brain cells every day, this is the place for you. No advancement whatsoever if you start out as part-time (and you will), very little training, very little responsibility that requires anyone to use any cognitive assets. Management is, with few exceptions, inconsistent, changes their mind every week, is not supported by – more... the District Manager (Michigan), is hammered to produce nearly impossible results using part-time people who are untrained, unmotivated, poorly compensated and bored. This is a company who touts themselves as "America's Favorite Place to Work" - while being on the far opposite end of it; the company does nothing for their employees that would have this catchy phrase be even close to true. If there are any disputes with customers, you, as the employee, will be thrown full-body under the bus and likely let go, while the complainant enjoys some kind of discount or freebie. Employees are thought of as a dime a dozen, and are treated like disposable tissues. My coworkers were wonderful people as a whole, and they are what kept me motivated to be there every day, and what made it possible to endure hours of patrolling the aisles, straightening boxes, throwing out mounds of garbage that customers leave everywhere, and putting up with some of the rudest, most arrogant customers in retail. Company policies are based on what the customer whines about, not on what is logical, practical or works for both the company AND the customer. – less

Sales Associate/Customer Service (Former Employee), Springfield, PAJanuary 1, 2014
Pros: great discount
Cons: not enough hours
Working at DSW was a great experience! My co-workers were fun and management was very compassionate. Working with shoes and fashion was fun, but working in retail at times you do not get as many hours as you would like.

Sociable place to be!
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Baltimore, MDDecember 20, 2013
Pros: good driving position
I worked the evening shift. In a typical day I would come to work punch in for the day greet and join others in a large sitting room, and await with my fellow coworkers for an assignment or manifest. As drivers we didn't always have a schedule ready to go out the door sometime you'd have to wait awhile. The room filled with voice and laughter or mild – more... jokes from some of the fellows, subjects on any where from sports to politics. This is when you get to learn people, so many funny personality and creative people. Hardest part of the job I can't recall if a challenge came up I would know what to do. There were people to reach if some place we simply couldn't get to or other things come up. We were always in touch with a professional dispatcher for change in route or emergency at times that would come up, or simply client cancellation. There was great camaraderie! – less
