Police Officer, Durham, North Carolina - September 1, 2015
My job function is to conduct desk duties. With the complexity of desk duties the dynamics change daily. Either a volume of incoming calls seeking assistance, walk-in citizens/victims who need help, or a host of other essential duties usually establishes a typical work day. While performing desk duty I have learned you must put yourself into another's shoes to truly appreciate their crisis, problem or dilemma. Management resides with each manager, therefore, you must be able to adapt to varying styles, approaches and methods. You will notice a difference between the veterans and the new guys. Veterans seek retirement, benefits and stability, new guys gravitate towards the quick money, the nice equipment and more time off. Communicating to citizens that to seek peace and less stress you must make the hard choice. The hard choice may increase your financial obligation, it may sever relationships and may temporarily induce pain and heartache. However, by making the hard choice you are freeing yourself from continued stress, heartache and pain. By far the most enjoyable aspect of my job is to Demonstrate to citizens that what they hear in the media is not representative of the officers they come in contact with.
