The Eisenhower Medical Center is perhaps less known by its presidential name than by the name of a first lady: The not-for-profit medical campus is the home of the Betty Ford Center. In addition to the renowned alcohol and drug rehabilitation center, Eisenhower Medical Center comprises the about 540-bed Eisenhower Memorial Hospital, the Barbara Sinatra Children's Center, and the Annenberg Center for Health Sciences. The center's facilities are all located on its main campus in Rancho Mirage, California. In addition to medical, surgical, and emergency services, the hospital offers cancer care, neurology, orthopedics, cardiology, and rehabilitation. It also operates outpatient clinics in surrounding areas.
The late entertainer Bob Hope and his wife were the hospital's biggest benefactors, having donated the original land for the hospital and continuing to help fundraising efforts until his death in 2003. The Eisenhower Medical Center maintains the leading market share in its service location, representing nearly 50% of the area.
The medical center has been working to maintain that share by launching a number of expansion campaigns in recent years. For instance, in 2010 it completed construction of a $213 million addition to its main hospital that included 160 patient beds, a cafeteria, information systems, and other departments. The addition is named the Eisenhower Walter and Leonore Annenberg Pavilion.
Also in 2010 it completed a $55 million outpatient center in La Quinta, the Argyros Health Center, which includes an urgent-care clinic, imaging center, breast health center and primary care offices, among other services. In addition, the hospital has opened new community clinics and emergency centers in the Palm Springs area.
The medical center is also working towards becoming a teaching hospital by adding residency programs in family medicine and internal medicine. It hopes to launch the programs in 2013.
Eisenhower Medical Center faces some financial challenges due to a high volume of elderly Medicare patients. As a result, it has made efforts to attract more self-pay patients to its facilities. In addition, the hospital has incurred substantial debt due to its construction efforts; however, it aims to recoup through increased revenues from the added facilities and through its successful fundraising efforts. – less
