When performing layoffs, look more to how long an employee has been there and their actual knowledge of the business rather than what their title is. The mass lay-off technique is only going to hurt EnerSys in the long run, a lot of great employees that were hard working and were in it for the long haul have been lost. Performance and knowledge in my eyes are more important than the actual title, example...if you have a service coordinator that has poor performance and attendance, and you have a sales coordinator who's job is being eliminated but can perform all job duties required as a service coordinator as well as great attendance and work performance. Let the service coordinator go rather than the more valuable employee. Your employees are not just a job title and an employee number, some of them have invested many years into being the best they can at your company, just to be thrown away due to the elimination of a title. Work with your local management before lay-offs to determine who should be let go rather than just pulling a file.
The CEO could be more proactive and visit the different locations of operation. He should also listen to the concerns of the employees.
