Erie Elementary Charter School (EECS) has embraced an amazing opportunity to create a new school and deliver educational excellence. As a small public charter school in Chicago's diverse Humboldt Park neighborhood, EECS has high expectations for all our students. We're not focused on only one idea, or driven by paperwork demands. Everything we do aims to serve our students. And we expect to meet our goal: every child reading at or above grade level by the crucial 3rd grade.
So, now into our second year, what are the results of our new creation? Visiting educators praise our culture of active learning, supported by vibrant teacher/student connections. This has been our signature since opening in 2005 with 80 kindergarten and 1st grade students, and remains this year with the addition of 2nd grade, bringing our enrollment to 125. We are extremely proud of these testimonies, and other early indicators of success:
ISEL (Illinois Snapshot of Early Learning) test data shows 100% of our young learners progressingâ€"many significantlyâ€"from where they started. We boast a 93% first-year attendance rate, up to 97% currently. Each of our five, six and seven year-old students has visited a college and sees college as his/her natural destination.
We're also creating a school culture where biliteracy in English and Spanish is valued. You should see what motivates our students: winning lunch with me as a reward for speaking Spanish; learning biliteracy is for African-Americans and Polish-Americans, too; and speaking more with Grandma in her native Spanish! We sustain children's natural curiosity for learning during their critical early elementary years. To us, this is the most important work anyone can do.
La Escuela Erie, as we sometimes call ourselves, is the creation of an incredible team of innovators. I am grateful to our respected founding partner Erie Neighborhood House, dedicated board members, generous contributors, highly skilled and caring teachers, and devoted families - both neighborhood residents and far-flung commuters who choose us as their child's educators.
Together we are creating Chicago's next great school. We invite you to visit and see for yourself. – less–ZoomInfo
