Esurance was an early pioneer selling car insurance to Internet-savvy customers and it remains one of the leading issuers of auto insurance online. The company offers quote comparisons and sells personal auto policies directly from its website and through select online agents. It also provides online access to accounts and makes telephone agents available for offline questions. Esurance sells auto insurance to customers in 30 states, with California and Florida its leading markets. Subsidiaries Esurance Insurance Company and Esurance Property and Casualty Insurance underwrite the company's auto policies. White Mountains Insurance Group sold Esurance to Allstate in 2011.
White Mountains held the company from 2000-2011 when it opted to move out of the online insurance biz. Allstate acquired Esurance and its sister company, Answer Financial, in a deal worth about $1 billion. The deal helped Allstate diversify its offerings and appeal to a whole new customer base. At the same time, it gave Esurance access to Allstate's established customer base and much larger resources.
Along with auto insurance, Esurance also sells property/casualty insurance (including homeowners insurance) and life and health insurance provided by third-party companies.
Ranked third in the online insurance market, (behind GEICO and Progressive), Esurance has remained visible in the marketplace through its aggressive advertising. Its pink-haired animated spokeswoman, Erin Esurance, became something of an Internet phenomenon and gave the company nationwide brand recognition. More recent campaigns have emphasized the customer's option of purchasing its products either online or by telephone. – less
