About Family Centers

Family Centers has been offering child care to Greenwich families since the opening of the day nursery nearly 100 years ago. Family Centers' Arch Street Preschool was the first center in Greenwich to be accredited by NAEYC in 1987.

In the past few years, Family Centers has adopted a curriculum called the Core Knowledge® Preschool Sequence developed

The Core Knowledge program gives teachers a framework for fostering fun and fundamentals in the areas of cognitive development, social skills, motor skills, language skills and work habits. It also helps preschoolers to develop social and communication skills to interact peacefully with classmates and teachers. Tanner emphasized, "The philosophy of Core Knowledge is to give kids the same core competencies, so they have equal potential for success in school.

There are about a half a dozen NAEYC accredited centers in the Greenwich area. "In recent years, we've seen a growing number of child care and preschool programs earning NAEYC Accreditation," said Mark Ginsberg, Ph.D., executive director of NAEYC. "By earning accreditation, Family Centers has become a leader in a national effort to raise the quality of early childhood education, and to help give all children a better start."

NAEYC created its accreditation program in 1985 to set professional standards for early childhood education and to help families identify high quality child care and early education programs. To earn NAEYC accreditation, a program conducts a self-study to determine how well it meets the standards. After necessary improvements are made, the program is observed by independent, professional validators, and then reviewed by a national panel. Programs are accredited by NAEYC for a five ,year period.

Family Centers is also accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services (COA), an independent, nationally recognized accreditor of mental health and social service agencies. The agency's early childhood education programs are also licensed by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. – lessMore from ZoomInfo »
