I liked what I did, but wish it had been more organized and consistent.
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Fairfax, VA – May 15, 2013
Cons: short breaks, inconsistent scheduling, no flexible schedule.
I usually started in the middle of the afternoon and closed. Usually on Friday nights. We got yelled at if we tried to trade shifts because of an unavoidable conflict. I only got 15 minutes to eat dinner. I learned how to work a cash register and help customers.

A difficult job but well worth the hours!
Sales Associate/Cashier (Former Employee), Parkersburg, WV – April 22, 2013
Pros: great management and co-workers, friendly and honest company
Cons: bad economy, not enough traffic to give you an opportunity to meet your metric goals.
I learned a lot about retail and sales from Family Christian Stores due to the spectacular management and the amazing sales associates I got to meet and work with. I learned how to use a register and I was able improve on speaking to strangers more confidently. My manager was amazing, she was very kind and taught me everything I needed to do my job – more... well, my co-workers were very easy to get along with and everyone of them were good moral people. The hardest part of the job was sales, you are required to get a child sponsored through World Vision per month, as a temporary employee it was not a stressed requirement but ultimately if you did not make your metric goals(a percentage of your total number of sales transactions and what you should have sold in them, imprints, donations etc.) then you would be very hard pressed to meet those goals and if you continually could not meet those goals you would be laid off and replaced by someone who could meet those goals. In this economy you are blessed to be able to meet every single goal if you are temporary or part time. – less

Great Place to work
General Manager (Former Employee), Chester, VA – March 25, 2013
Pros: loved the work, this was my dream job
A typical day was spent getting in about 2 hrs before opening, doing all my paperwork, and starting to stock any product that was needed to be put on shelves. I had to to this because it was a small store, and most of the day was spent on my own. I learned so much about my management style, dealing with new people. My staff was great.

FCS is a great place to work for someone that is interersted in an atmosphere that offers strong morale standards. It offers some of the best down to earth literature.

Good promoters of Christian valued products
Accounts Payable/EDI Analyst (Former Employee), Grand Rapids, MI – March 12, 2013
Pros: great cafeteria, and benefits.
Cons: not much in pay though.
At the time of working there, I went back to college to earn my Master's Degree. It was tough to move up in the organization so I moved out when I got my degree.

Loved my customers and staff
Retail Store Management (Former Employee), Cedar Park, TX – January 15, 2013
Pros: enjoyable knowledgable customers and small staff was like family
Cons: uppermanagment
Loved the job itself and the customers and my staff. As for uppermanagment that was horrible. Uppermanagment made for a very hostile work environment. Many good managers have left this company and will continue to do so. The hours for a manager were not to bad but when it came to needing time with family that was hard to do. There was no balance between – more... work and home life which is something the company always says is balanced. – less

An okay place to work
Sales Associate (Current Employee), Lancaster, CA – December 14, 2012
Pros: good people, most good working environments
Cons: low pay, too few hours, sales-driven not christ-driven
If all you need is the occasional paycheck to bolster another job, then this is a great place to work at. However, I called in sick one day and have not been given a shift for 3 weeks! Despite being a Christian workplace, sales are pushed upon employees and if they do not meet their quotas, they take away your hours.

Not a recommended place to work
Sales Associate / Assistant Manager (Former Employee), Elyria, Ohio – November 29, 2012
Pros: the customers and co-workers
Cons: upper managements attitude towards you if you missed sales numbers, or couldn't get children sponsored through world vision, only pay minimum wage, when moved up to assistant manager received a $.50 raise, if hired from outside company they will pay you $9.00 an hour
Go to bank, open the store, checking out customers, assisting customers with any needs they may have. Store management was great, The District and manager and up were encouraging to your face and then through emails would talk about how you're not doing a good enough job and how you're numbers in selling $5 items and getting World Vision children sponsored – more... should be happening more often. Co-workers were awesome! Hardest part of the job was being talked down to through emails by management and made to feel like nothing you did was ever good enough until you're numbers increased and you got a thank you. Most enjoyable part was the customers. Always being able to help them on the floor to find what it was they were looking for and spending time with my coworkers even during work hours. Such a great group of people!! – less

I perform the job of an Assistant Manager/Senior Sales Assistant
Senior Sales Associate/Assistant Manager (Current Employee), Austell, GA – November 5, 2012
Pros: i get to use my business degree skills on this job. i also love working with the public.
Cons: it's retail which pays very low wages with inconsistant hours and no benefits
I check the metrics when I start my shift to see how our numbers are for the day so far then determine if I need to change staff tasks according to personal strengths. I check company emails, and delegate tasks and perform the assignments designated to me as an assistant Manager. I make deposits to the bank, count and manage cash, credit card, and check – more... transactions at the end of the day and prepare the deposit and paper work at the end of the day. – less

fun working place
Sales Associate (Former Employee), Jonesboro, GA – October 23, 2012
Pros: was a stress free environment
Cons: no insurance
Typical day at work consisted of running the register, cleaning the store, stocking shelves, Helping customers and locking up. I learned a lot about bibles and christian culture. I loved my Mgr, he was great to work with and I got along with all the other employees. The hardest part of the job was counting down the teal and the most enjoyable was just – more... being able to help customers and make new friends. – less

Corporate America
Store Manager (Former Employee), Gilbert – October 19, 2012
Pros: store staff
Cons: all the higher ups and there threats!
This company only cares about making a profit at any cost! They make money off of World Vision and treat there managers like slaves! They constantly threaten them and put so much pressure. This company is terrible! Do not work here or shop here! You do not want to support a company like this! Shop at Mardels or Berean if you need Christian product at – more... least they treat there employees with respect! – less

smarshal – November 5, 2012

Not everyone is cut out for retail. definite sales position must be able to engage customers and be a self starter. Don't expect someone to show you how to do the things you probably said you could do during the interview. Profits go to fund missions. Thousands of World V. kids have been saved by sponsors thru FCS. Co. gives customers $20 to sponsor. WV was going under until FCS started advertising for them. It didn't bother you to get paid to work there. Pastors get paid to preach on Sun. too. It is a dream job for someone who wants to do missions, but needs a paycheck. If you don't like this job, you will not like any retail job. By the way, no one seems to care if other stores make a profit or what they do with their profits. I have been with them for 3 years and love it.

Abused – November 14, 2012

What this former employee said is all true. This company treats employees horrible, and uses scripture to abuse them and threaten them. They tell you that if you don't hit your WV quota, then you are sinning against God. This is nuts. World Vision PAYS Family Christian to promote them...millions of dollars that customers have donated to WV goes back to Family Christian. Yes it is true that Family Christian profits go to support ministry, but it's their own foundation, The James Fund....and the percent that goes to them is very very small! So many good employees have been fired because they didn't get enough WV kids sponsored, and that is wrong. They will deny this is happening, but I know the truth, and so do so many others! The abuse doesn't stop with World Vision either...I could go on. It is very sad what this company has become!

FUN AND RELAXED WORK ENVIRONMENT
RETAIL ASSOCIATE (Former Employee), Webster, TX – October 1, 2012
Pros: laid back work place
Cons: everything is learned on your own
STRAIGHTEN UP THE STORE, PUT OUT NEW MERCHANDISE, ASSISTED CUSTOMERS, WORKED CASH REGISTER, OPENED AND CLOSED STORE.

LEARNED HOW TO MULTI-TASK, DIRECT CALLS, END OF THE DAY REPORTS, OPEN AND CLOSE A STORE.

MANAGEMENT WAS VERY LAID BACK, BUT NOT TOO LAID BACK. ALWAYS GAVE EMPLOYEES DIRECTION AND WAS VERY UNDERSTANDING AND PATIENT.

CO-WORKERS WERE – more... VERY RESPECTFUL, EASY GOING, AND KEPT PRIVATE LIFE SEPARATE FROM WORK ENVIRONMENT.

LOVED THIS JOB! – less

Pros: healthcare
Cons: purple apron dress code
Family Christian is a spiritually inspiring company. A day would be maintaining the departments. Accounts receivables and customer service. My co workers were hard working genuinely kind individuals. I really enjoyed the positive environment.

mind games, hourly sales quotas, and constant threats of termination.
sales associate (Former Employee), Illinois – August 24, 2012
Never know if you will be working 30 hours or 3 hours in any given week. There is no training on the products that are required to be sold to meet hourly quotas. Can lose your job if you cannot guilt enough people into sponsoring a thirld world child. All this for minimum wage and no benefits.
