It's always hard to know what to expect when going in for that interview -- and preparation can make all the difference. What is the interview process like at Federal Government Jobs? Any advice on striking the right note?

Id like to know why the "Who you know theory?" supersedes qualifications and the fair-hiring process for government jobs? 1.) Why do the federal government post jobs on USAJOBS, then give that job to someone internal? 2.) Why post jobs and never give the applicant a status, especially if they are on a referral list for that job? Seems to me that the Federal hiring process needs overhaul, especially for people with advanced degrees, veteran status and more. Hiring managers have TOO much power!!

I have applied to more than 100 video production positions at USAjobs. I have 20+ years of video experience, EMMY awards, 9 years of video management, I judge national video production competitions, I write articles for a national magazine on video production, I write my own blog on technology and I volunteer my time as an internet expert on video production. But- I constantly get letters back a few weeks after applying saying I'm either not qualified or I'm eligible, but I was not referred to the selecting official. I think with all of the qualifications I just listed above, it's fair to say that I'm extremely qualified for a video production position. I am NOT a veteran (I failed the physical due to a childhood injury, but am not disabled). The only reasons I can think of as to why I'm not selected to move farther in the process is either because of moving expenses or because I'm not a veteran. What can I do to get noticed and hired?

Personally, I think government jobs are the best out there. The pay is pretty good, benefits, etc. Granted, the work may be "slow" and the career path may be dead ended. And even as a government contractor, I think the opportunities are still good. http://www.governmentjobtips.com I wonder if Obama's green jobs have impacted those out there...

I've longed questioned some of the hiring practices done on the base where I work at and my wife is stationed at. I've applied for around 15 jobs in the 4 years we've been here and haven't got so much as a phone call back. All the jobs I applied for had the Competitive Preferences on the announcements. I checked to 10-point preference for 30% and above (I'm 80%). All these jobs I clearly was qualified for due to work I done while in the Army. Some of them were basic Office Automation jobs. Well right now I have a application in for two jobs that just closed out on friday that I once again qualify for. I decided to do some research and I came across this VetGuide that talks about Disqualification of 30 percent or More Disabled Veterans. Here's what it said.. -If an agency proposes to pass over a disabled veteran on a certificate to select a person who is not a preference eligible, or to disqualify a disabled veteran based on the physical requirements of the position, it must at the time notify both the Office of Personnel Management(OPM) and the disabled veteran of the reasons for the determination and the veteran's right to respond to OPM within 15 days of the date of the notification. -The agency must provide evidence to OPM that the notice was timely sent to the disabled veteran's last known address. -OPM must make a determination on the disabled veteran's physical ability to perform the duties of the position, taking into account any additional information provided by the veteran. -OPM will notify the agency and the disabled veteran of its decision, with which the agency must comply. If OPM agrees that the veteran cannot fulfill the physical requirements of the position, the agency may select another person from the certificate of eligibles. If OPM finds the veteran able to perform the job, the agency may not pass over the veteran. None of this has happened in any of the jobs I applied for. Is this right?
