picker (Former Employee), Mira Loma, CA – May 30, 2013
Pros: excellent pay
Cons: heavy lifting
this was the best company I ever worked for, the pay is great, if you don't mind cherry picking over 50lbs everyday. it has its good days because sometimes you case pick bolts, nuts, screws and kitchen faucets. The company gives you t-shirts, jackets and hats. They have company picnics and raffles.

Good Job with good benefits
Floater Utility (Former Employee), McGregor, Texas – May 12, 2013
Pros: i worked day shift which gives you an hour lunch.
Cons: none really
Not a bad place to work. Coworkers were decent. Management was good when I was there. I was a Floater Utility which basically meant I was utilized in any department as needed. The more you learn about the job, you will eventually be asked to travel. I spent a decent amount of time in various facilities in California, Utah, and Alabama.

Accounts Payable Specialist (Former Employee), Newport News, VA – April 19, 2013
Pros: i enjoyed the work i was doing.
Cons: the constant pressure i was always under.
This was a contract job through a temporary agency that was to last three months. Ferguson terminated the contract early at 60 days with very little (a week) notice. Dozens of people lost their jobs.

In the centralized credit unit where I worked, the typical day entailed us processing credit applications for the Ferguson stores nationwide. I learned to express myself in a business atmosphere and improve my typing skills.

Mas A Menos - The Good With The Bad
Truck Driver (Current Employee), Western Region – March 3, 2013
I'm a truck driver, have been doing so for a long, long time. I had never heard of Ferguson before but I found the company in a way I won't share here since my review is going to be mixed and since some of the managers are not accepting of anything that doesn't make both them and the company look rosy and peachy.

From a truck driver's perspective and – more... having worked at a lot of trucking companies, the benefits are awesome. 6 paid holidays; 5 sick days; 2 and a half weeks vacation; 3 personal days to start with. That goes up after 7 years to 3 and a half paid vacation time.

You won't last at this company if you don't have a good work ethic, period. If you are not a motivated, hard and energetic worker, don't even bother trying to get into this company, your days at this employer will be numbered and you will be a goner. That is something I actually like about this company, it doesn't tolerate slackers. If someone is slacking, then someone else has to take up that slack for them.........

As for other reviews complaining about 50 hour work weeks, well all I can say to that is that I have lived my life working 12-14 hours per day, 6 or 7 days a week. Coming to this company and working 5 days a week, regardless of how many hours I might have to put in and being home on the weekends? Cakewalk. 50 hours is nothing. Typical day at work? Clock in, work your behind off. Pull orders; service customers; load trucks; computer/Trilogy work; inventory/warehouse/unloading freight trucks.. Outside salesmen are very busy individuals. Dealing with their customers and yes, many of them end up having to deliver material on their own pickups to get the job done. Inside salesmen, at least in our region, are busy the entire day. Non-stop, fast-paced environment. Warehouse work - depends on the workload on any given day. But there is always something to do. Most days I have more work than I can get done.

I don't find the workload overwhelming, either. Yes, it's a busy day, usually, very busy. You get on the clock and you are jumping all day long. But, I don't just drive trucks anymore. I do warehousing; counter sales; inventory issues, all kinds of things not normally associated with the title of a truck driver. No, we're aren't all dumb, stupid people that couldn't figure out anything else to do in life. Yes, there are many moronic truck drivers but I believe there are just as many very intelligent truck drivers out there as well. I find the mix of driving and doing all the rest of it to be a very compelling to stay at this company, but after this, is where the review isn't going to paint such a rosy picture.

When I first started driving for this company, management was very good. Easy to get along with; no tendencies to micro-manage; no yelling or otherwise arrogant and disrespectful behavior being doled down to the blue collar workers. It was a good working environment and I loved it.

At some point, at the local level where I work, management was "traded out". One individual brought into the warehouse who was an (insert not-so-nice adjective here). Overbearing; yelling at employees; cranking on people for petty issues; on and on; He drove several people out of the company.

As management changed or evolved, so did it's view and treatment of the employees that were/are underneath them. In some cases very abusive treatment of employees that borderlines harassment, the workload increased heavily as downsizing occurred after the housing bubble/collapse and more demands were placed on existing employees. Accusations of theft (completely unwarranted and totally subjective); brash, rude and coercive statements being made from management that are totally out of the line of what I consider to be the "Ferguson way" of doing things. Micro-managing. Not a fan of it. If a person needs micro-managed, then the company needs to find another person to take his/her place. This is company-wide at the local level though I seriously doubt the GM knows much about what goes on behind his back.

So yes, I am unhappy about the way management treats employees at this point in time, including higher-level managers berating lower-level management. This is not only non-productive, it tends to make for an unhappy workplace and also tends to make employees feel extremely unappreciated. Instead of hearing a "thanks for a job well done", which is virtually non-existent at this point, we just hear how much more we should be able to get done and how much more efficient our work day should be. Even though we are pumping out extremely good numbers at the end of the month, nothing seems to ever be good enough for them. Much of it is extremely insulting verbiage that I simply don't tolerate well. If a person is working their behind off and getting the job done, what is the problem here?

As for my co-workers, well, it's a mix. Pretty much what you would expect: some great people to work with and some not-so-wonderful people who are always in a bad mood. Lots of foul language. Just throwing that out there if a person is looking for a "moral" job environment without all the colorful language, you probably aren't going to do well here. That kind of language is pretty much heard from upper management on down the line. I do have some great relationships with several co-workers. I don't think you are going to find much different no matter where you work on the co-worker level of things.

The hardest part of the job? After years of pouring your heart out and being loyal to a company, you never hear a thanks or "job-well-done" with the exception of the GM. Amazing the only person you hear that from is a person you rarely ever see or have the time to talk with who is, at the local level, above all the rest of the management. There is something to be said about the motivation it gives you and the morale that is to be had when management could be just a bit more vocal - at least once in a great while - about your accomplishments. This isn't just me being a whiner and having some sort of axe to grind, this is simply the reality of it and others having the same sentiments. Some management has been promoted to their positions and.......simply don't have a clue. They may get their jobs done well and their management might be happy with them, but they simply have no idea how to interact with the "peons" since that is pretty much the way the rest of us are treated. As I have stated, this didn't start out this way when I first started working at this company, but it certainly has evolved into that kind of atmosphere.

The easiest part of the job? If you like the job you are doing, then it's all easy. Regardless, I think Ferguson would stand well to give management some training on giving at least some positive feedback to it's employees. I don't expect or want to hear such every single day, but once in a great while? How hard is that?

Advancement: You know the drill. People who know people. People who kiss other people's - you know whats. That's how you advance in large corporations and Ferguson certainly isn't any different. I have watched it going on for years now. I don't get into the kissing-the-behind routine too well, I am very respectful but sucking up and playing those kinds of games just aren't in my blood, probably the reason I haven't been promoted. I have watched people who have no business getting promoted - get promoted solely because of their "ability" to sit around and drool at the feet of those that can make it happen. No, I don't give much credence to that kind of philosophy. I believe that if you work hard each and every day and you put forth your best effort each and every day and you do a great job - yes - each and every day, THAT is what should get a person promoted, not the "good-ole-boy" junk that prevails in much of corporate America.

Pay raises: not all that great in recent years, but then again, the economy hasn't been doing all that well either. Bonuses: depends of course your position in the company, not bad though.

After all is said and done, it's a good company to work for. You have to be able to put up with some BS, but that's true to some degree in any company. If you are looking to work at Ferguson, the operative word is: work!! This isn't an idle, sit-around-and-do-nothing company and the company demands - and I would add rightfully so - that you put forth 100% and keep a good attitude. My issues with management I just keep to myself and not let it affect my work duties. Of course, sharing it on this site isn't exactly keeping it to myself, is it? Just thought it an important part of giving an accurate review of the place and I can't honestly say that the WHOLE company operates like that, only what I have experienced in the region that I work in. – less

New, challenging, rewarding
Outside Sales Representative (Current Employee), Fargo ND – January 29, 2013
Work with different customers each day. Learn about new products, regulations and upcoming market trentds. Coworkers are team oriented and intelligent in their field. The hardest part is staying on top of current market pricing, trends and regulations and communicating it in a timely fashion to the appropriate parties. The most enjoyable part is being – more... able to help problem solve to complete a project. – less

I was the Shipping Manager for a major distribution center.
Shipping Manager (Former Employee), Fort Payne, AL – January 24, 2013
Pros: good rapport with management
Cons: sometimes it was very physically demanding work.
I was responsible for the loading of over 25 trucks a day plus the processing of over 2000 UPS packages every day.
I had a crew of 15 people to accomplish this task. The hardest part of the job was that it was an entry level position in the facility thus a very large turn over rate. I was constantly training new people.

Monthly Store meetings great way to recognize jobs well done.
Receptionist (Former Employee), Lubbock, TX – January 13, 2013
Pros: burger burns, feeding local plumbers.
Cons: dealing with broken product.
High pace work environment, with so much to learn. The management willing to teach by example. Co-workers all worked hard together and played hard together, more like family. I would say the hardest parts of this job, would have to be finding the discontinued items for customers who don't like change. The most enjoyable part of this job was being part – more... of a great team. – less

Pros: nice location
Cons: lack of support
Lack of support from management, which was necessary in order to grow and expand local business. One of the issues when working with a very large coporation is all the red tape to get something accomplished. Lack of management support was a issue.
