About Fort Bend County Women's Center
Our Heritage - Starting only with a crisis hotline, the Fort Bend County Women's Center has been serving Fort Bend and surrounding counties since 1980. With over 30,000 women, children and some men having been served, the FBCWC is proud to be the primary advocate for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in our region. Our Philosophy - We believe that:
The crime of domestic violence is more than an occasional family dispute which violates an individual's privacy, dignity, security, and humanity due to systematic use of physical, emotional, sexual, and/or psychological abuse and economic control, including abuse to children and the elderly; and
The problems of domestic violence are not confined to any group or groups of people, but cut across all economic, racial and societal barriers, and are supported by societal indifferences; and
The impact of domestic violence is wide ranging, directly affecting individuals and society as a whole, here in this community and, throughout the United States and the world; and
It is battered women themselves and those persons most impacted by this tragedy who have been in the forefront of efforts to bring peace and equality to the home; and
Becoming aware of the tragedy of domestic violence, by supporting those who are working toward its end, and by participating in community education efforts, we will break the cycle of violence in our community-at-large.
What We Do - The goal of the Women's Center, as the only service provider in Fort Bend County, is to be a resource for abused women and children who have nowhere else to turn. The Women's Center offers intervention services: a 24-hour crisis hotline; an emergency shelter; rape crisis services; safety planning and lethality assessment; food and clothing; emergency and basic medical services; counseling; transportation; case management; legal accompaniment and advocacy; children's programs; a learning resource center; computer training, job readiness, financial empowerment, parenting, and self-esteem building workshops; permanent and transitional housing assistance programs; and job placement assistance, all with the goal of helping victims become safe and self-sufficient. The Center also provides prevention services: community education, professional trainings, structured education and a primary prevention curriculum.
