Four Kitchens ( is searching for a full-time, highly motivated, ops-minded developer with a passion for open-source technologies and making cool, innovative stuff for the web.

If you...

  • Have a passion for innovation
  • Are an advocate for open source
  • Consider yourself a maker
  • Never stop learning
  • Enjoy working in close knit teams
  • Want to be a name and not a number
  • Are comfortable with client interaction

...then you'd be a great fit for this role.

Your responsibilities would include:

  • Becoming an expert at our chosen open-source platforms. This will require creating custom modules and plugins, debugging and patching the core components, and understanding the source code of the systems you work with.
  • Implementing awesome devops workflows and tools: dev-stage-production workflow, source control tools to manage your codebase, etc.
  • Understanding the web's infrastructure to create highly performant and scalable features.
  • Developing for multiple devices and interactions: desktops, touch devices like smartphones and tablets, simpler devices like feature phones, etc.
  • Designing and developing code architecture that promotes reuse, readability, and best-practice coding standards.
  • Testing and debugging at all levels, from unit to acceptance.
  • Passionately keeping pace with rapid innovation in web technologies.
  • Working with other members of the team on problems, but also working individually as required by the project.
  • Demonstrating your team's work to clients on a regular schedule.

  • Intellectual curiosity and passion for making really cool stuff for the web.
  • Expert Apache, Linux, and MySQL skills.
  • Experience with at least two modern programming or scripting languages (such as PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, or Python).
  • Know languages and technologies at all levels of our application stack.
  • Experience with infrastructure automation frameworks (Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or similar).
  • Experience working with AWS, OpenStack, or other advanced cloud platform.
  • Experience working with bare metal servers.
  • Varnish, memcache, nginx, content distribution networks, and/or other caching experience.
  • Enthusiasm for open-source philosophy and community involvement.
  • Passionate about software development and web technologies.
  • Experience building systems that scale to tens of thousands of concurrent users.
  • Professional, yet personable, demeanor. You must be able to represent yourself and Four Kitchens to our clients, other members of your team, and to open-source communities at large.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience developing with Drupal, Node.js or Symfony.
  • Experience architecting and implementing complex “real time” web software and/or messaging systems.
  • Familiarity with a range of design patterns.
  • Experience with automated testing platforms and techniques (such as SimpleTest or Selenium).
  • Previous work on open-source projects and adhering to coding standards.
  • Bachelor's or higher in a technical, scientific, or engineering discipline. (Why preferred rather than required? Because we don't believe that college teaches people how to be good at what they do. Experience and passion are more important, and being a constant self-educator is essential.)

Super-duper bonus points:

  • Experience building websites for mobile devices (such as tablets, smartphones, feature phones).
  • Experience working with large, high-performance websites.

About Four Kitchens

(tl;dr: We make BIG websites, we contribute tons of code to open-source communities, and we’re doing lots of forward-thinking stuff in the mobile space.)

We are not your typical web shop.

First, we only work with open-source software. We believe open source is the future, and setting knowledge free makes the world a better place.

Second, we’re a lot of fun. We not only do cool stuff on the web – we do cool stuff in real life. Our hobbies include cycling, rock climbing, music, sketch comedy, yoga, writing, and home brewing. We also actively participate in various charities, community meet-ups, and volunteer activities.

Third, we deeply value our coworkers. Four Kitchens is not just a company – it’s a closely knit team. And although we work hard, we strive to maintain a good work-life balance. This is why we have an unlimited paid leave policy, encourage time off, and look for fun, creative, projects outside of client work to learn new things and expand our abilities.

Though we’re all in Austin, Texas, our clients are located across North America, Europe, and the Middle East. While our largest clients are companies, we also serve a number of charities and non-profits. Our projects are mostly large-scale, and they require extensive client collaboration and occasional on-site work.

Though we handle (very) big projects, we’re small enough that our team members go by names, not numbers. Everyone at Four Kitchens – including the owners – is primarily a contributor, not a manager. Everyone has a strong say in what we do and how we do it.

We hope you’ll join us.
