About Fractured Atlas
Fractured Atlas also provides subsidized arts management consulting services to its members. Already we've helped manage such diverse projects as the mounting of a backer's audition for a new play and the development of a dynamic new website. We've also provided counseling on Board development and financial management.
And at our most recent board – more... meeting last month, our new grant programs officially became active. Fractured Atlas now provides direct grant funding to its members in three categories of support: Creative Development Grants, Organizational Development Grants, and Collaborative Production Grants. In keeping with our mission, these grants are all made in areas and ways that are typically overlooked by mainstream funding bodies. Creative Development Grants support process-oriented creative exploration that is separate and distinct from any single project, but which serves to enhance a member's creative capacities. These grants have been used to subsidize tuition at specialized training programs, and to fund workshops and master classes for ensemble groups. Organizational Development Grants provide a similar kind of support, but are specifically targeted at enhancing the organizational capacity of small arts groups. These might be used to cover the legal fees involved in becoming incorporated, or the security deposit for a new rehearsal studio. Finally, we offer Collaborative Production Grants, which go to support the most extraordinary, ambitious, and entrepreneurial efforts of our member community. This is the most comprehensive level of support that Fractured Atlas offers. Recipients of Collaborative Production Grants receive not only substantial funding for a particular project, but also a similar amount of in-kind managerial support. Fractured Atlas also takes a minority ownership stake in the project itself. This insures that if anything hits big, a portion of the gains go back in the pot to subsidize grants in future years.
These services form the core of what Fractured Atlas currently provides its members. Nonetheless, we are constantly working to improve our existing services, and to introduce new services to meet specific needs in the arts community. Later this month will see the introduction of subsidized legal services for Fractured Atlas members. Independent artists face countless legal challenges in establishing and building their careers, including intellectual property issues, incorporation, applications for tax-exempt status, charity filings, and producer contracts. Yet hardly any of these artists can afford the exorbitant hourly rates charged by most corporate lawyers. Fractured Atlas has contracted with a law firm that specializes in arts-related legal issues to provide a wide range of legal services to our members at substantially subsidized rates.
Coming years hold the promise of numerous other exciting and ambitious new services, including such diverse offerings as free web hosting and email, subsidized office space and artist housing, and the establishment of a national federal credit union for the Fractured Atlas community.
For Fractured Atlas to achieve its goals with maximum effectiveness and reach, however, we need all the help we can get. I'm very proud that we have 400 members today. But I fully expect that within the next 3-5 years, we can have 10,000. The need is there - that much is clear. The artists I speak to every day react with shock and disbelief when they discover that the huge range of benefits we offer costs them just $75/year in membership dues. But we need the support of people like those here tonight to ensure that we can get the message out, and that we continue to have the ability to provide such unparalleled support to the arts community. We've spent the last year getting our own house in order. Fractured Atlas is completely out of debt for the first time in its five year history, and we're getting stronger every day. But I won't belabor the point. Those of you who can afford to make a tax-deductible contribution, you will earn our gratitude as well as that of our members. This works just like the PBS pledge drive - no amount is too small, and your gift really does make a difference. – less – More from ZoomInfo »
