Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA) operates a network of more than 1,800 dialysis clinics located throughout the US. One of the largest providers of kidney dialysis services, FMCNA offers outpatient and in-home hemodialysis treatments for chronic kidney disease, as well as nutritional counseling and other patient services through its UltraCare – more... business segment. Through other operating businesses, the company markets and sells dialysis machines and related equipment; its Spectra Laboratories offers renal research and laboratory services. FMCNA oversees the North American operations of dialysis giant Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. and accounts for about 65% of its parent's revenue.
Financial Analysis
FMCNA's 2011 revenue was flat, up just a quarter of a percent from 2010 to $8.2 billion. Dialysis care services, which bring in 90% of FMCNA's overall sales, rose slightly that year, primarily due to organic growth. That was offset by a decline in dialysis product sales.
Strategy
Government programs account for a significant portion of revenues for dialysis services in the US, so FMCNA is keenly attuned to changes in reimbursement policy from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Veterans Administration. Mergers and Acquisitions
The company's parent struck two acquisition deals in 2012 that will expand the FMCNA network. Early in the year it acquired Liberty Dialysis Holdings, which operates clinics through Liberty Dialysis Inc. and Renal Advantage, for some $1.7 billion. Following the acquisition, FMCNA arranged to divest more than 60 of the clinics from Liberty but will have 200 clinics remaining. The firm also agreed to purchase American Access Care Holdings for $385 million, which will add vascular access centers that provide minimally invasive surgery services for dialysis patients. – less
