The world's well-known floral delivery service, FTD links about 16,000 North American retail florists and some 40,000 additional florists in about 155 countries through its largest subsidiary, Florists' Transworld Delivery, Inc. (FTDI). FTD provides technology for FTDI, handling billing, and marketing. It also operates a direct-to-consumer business through FTD.COM and 1-800-SEND-FTD, offering more than 400 floral arrangements and 800-plus specialty products delivered next day throughout most of the US. FTD, formed in 1910, offered the first flowers-by-wire service. It is owned by holding company FTD Group (formerly Mercury Man Holdings), which was acquired in 2008 by Internet service provider United Online.
The deal gave FTD shareholders 15% of United Online, which operates the NetZero and Juno ISPs. Following completion of the deal, FTD became a wholly-owned subsidiary of United Online and continues to operate from its current facilities in the US and abroad.
The company conducts its business in the UK and Ireland via Interflora Holdings, which parent FTD Group purchased in 2006. – less
