Gabriel, blow your horn -- your magical, mystical discount horn, that is. Gabriel Brothers sells discounted brand-name clothing through more than 100 stores, under the Gabriel Brothers (commonly called "Gabes") and Rugged Wearhouse banners. Its stores are located in about a dozen East Coast and Mid-Atlantic states. The company's offerings include men's, women's, and children's apparel and footwear, as well as housewares. Gabriel Brothers carries such brands as Anne Klein, Kenneth Cole, and Liz Claiborne and features markdowns as high as 70% off of their original retail prices. The family-run company was established in 1961 by James and Arthur Gabriel.
Citing "unprecedented growth" amid the US recession, the company made plans to expand its stores to 50,000 sq. ft. and larger. Gabriel Brothers says the larger stores will be able to house a wider selection of merchandise, including apparel, products for babies and children, furniture, and promotional items. The retailer expanded and remodeled a handful of stores during the downturn in the economy. In addition to remodeling existing stores, Gabriel Brothers is interested in expanding its store network along the East Coast, as well as extending its reach to new markets.
Gabriel Brothers hopes to get high school students involved in its summer employment program. As part of the program, students receive advice on resume preparation, professional etiquette, and career strategies, all while working part time in the company's distribution center. The firm believes its program can help teens to acquire valuable work experience as rising unemployment in the US squeezes opportunities, especially in the retail industry. – less
