I had a great time at work today. I did some online orders for some of the customers which made them happy. It's all about customer service.
Supervisor (Current Employee), Niles, OH – June 4, 2013
Pros: some good buys and the discounts. very very flexible with you when you need time off.
Cons: i guess, maybe that you have to double check some of the signs for sales that the corporate sends down.
I learned that taking care of your customers can be fun because some people can make your day and give you some knowledge from the life or work experiences.
I get along with everyone I work with and we help each other out. We work as a team.
I really don't feel that there is a hard part of my job. As long as I keep busy doing my job all day it seem – more... to be pretty easy.
The most enjoyable part of the day is talking with the other associates and sharing our funny times and they are also there for the sad times. Also the customers get to know you and tell you some of their life stories. – less

Gander Mountain Summary
Provide Customer Service (Current Employee), Tuscaloosa, AL – May 22, 2013
Gander Mountain is a really great place to work. The only thing I have seen that I did not like about it was that it seems like all the managers and supervisors are very unorganized but I think it's just because we are a brand new store. All of the employees are really kind as well as the managers and supervisors.

I enjoy working at GMTN!
Camping Part Time (Current Employee), USA – May 9, 2013
Pros: fun staff, discount and opportunity to learn!
Cons: concrete floor kills your feet..
So I was looking for a part time job to supplement my income. While at GMTN helping my mom buy a shotgun the guy behind the counter said jokingly 'maybe you should work here, you don't need me..' Chewing on these words, I decided to apply for a camping position when I got home.. Flash-forward one week and I am sitting on a computer doing some tedious – more... training. (If you pay attention to the computer training you will be ahead of the game. Most people just try to get it done and over with quickly.) Immediately following training I was sent to the front register. After a day on the register they had me in camping stocking new product.

This is how you spend about 1/2 of your time. The other half is spent helping customers and covering other departments. Keeping myself occupied by working in different departments makes the day enjoyable. Talking to people about the stuff I am genuinely interested in is always fun.

The coworkers at my store are awesome and the management is really pretty great! It's obvious that the managers have pressure to do certain tasks. I think that ours do a good job at delivering instruction and they don't want to be up your a** all the time. I can see how some on here have bad experience with management that don't do such a great job and in result are under increased pressure.

Now here comes the caveats. If you are in firearms or customer service you will be expected to sell a set number of protection plans and credit cards each day. Collective underachievement can result in a sour manager. If you are in footwear, you are expected to sell add-ons with the shoe sales.

My advice is to work here if you like the outdoors and want to save money on your outdoor gear! All of the positions have their pros and cons but I think camping, fishing and apparel are the best. Camping if you don't mind lifting heavy stuff, fishing if you don't mind sorting lures(it gets old) or apparel if you don't mind folding clothes while customers go tornado on your department all day. Footwear is a real relaxed section but I imagine the day would go really slow. If you have your heart set on firearms or customer service don't worry they are fun too. – less

I enjoyed working with the people and the product we sold
Receiving Supervisor (Former Employee), Jackson, TN – May 8, 2013
Pros: a work environment in which i looked forward to going to work each day.
Cons: i hardly ever took a break as part of being a supervisor
I learned the process of shipping and receiving, practically self-taught, in a brand-new store opening from bare walls to a full stocking and inventory. I learned how to organize merchandise and personnel in the receiving, processing, sorting, stocking, and inventory of bulk trucks of merchandise and products. I received and accounted for literally – more... tens of thousands of federally-regulated fire arms over a four year period.I shipped hundreds of pallets of bulk merchandise, and accountable packages such as firearms and customer orders with care and attention to detail. I enjoyed working with my co-workers, because they too enjoyed being there for the job. It was a hard day on truck-unloading days, but I felt a sense of accomplishment when the task was accomplished and finished. The most enjoyable part of the job was when I could turn around the attitude of an unhappy customer by meeting their needs and retaining them for future business. – less

More concerned with selling extended warranties. Little concern for customer service.
Camping Cooking Apparel and Footwear Specialist (Current Employee), Sheffield Village, OH – April 30, 2013
Pros: close to home. employee discount
Cons: few hours. low pay. no benefits. don't make enough money to actually use employee discount.
If it weren't for a few specific aspects, this could be someone's dream job. However, low pay, no set schedule, constant cutting of hours makes it difficult for a person to help support a family. There is a major push to sell customers "Summit Plans" (a 12 month warranty) on every item, even those that come with lifetime warranties from the manufacturer, – more... as well as a push to sign every customer up for a credit card. Every emphasis is placed on these two things with none whatsoever placed on "customer service". If an employee does not reach their Summit and Credit card goals, they are "encouraged" to purchase them themselves or risk losing their jobs. Management is very unorganized. I have seen 4 managers/supervisors come and go in the time I've worked here, including the store manager of 15 years. – less

outdoor retail with less than perfect management
Customer Service Lead (Former Employee), Fargo, ND – April 25, 2013
Pros: 25% discount on most anything in the store, decent medical ins.
Cons: poor management, no chance to advance, confined to a small area in the front of the store
Depending on the time of day that you came into work you were either opening or closing the store. I answered all phone calls to the store and transferred them to the appropriate people, stocking merchandise, checking out customers, but not limited to returns and sales with cash or credit card transactions.

I learned all about the sports of the great – more... outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and outdoor apparel.

Management is the reason I left Gander Mountain. I would be willing to explain when the time is right.

I liked working with all of my co-workers. Most of them were men, but all the same we had fun and did our job together.

The hardest part of my job was trying to meet the goals that the managers put on me towards the end of my time with credit cards and summit plans.

The most enjoyable part was learning about the great outdoors even though I do not hunt or fish. I still learned something to carry on to my family that do actively hunt and fish. – less

If you are borderline special, work here
Firearms (Former Employee), FL – April 17, 2013
Cons: everything
Terrible place to work, they constantly change managers, not to mention you will have no less than 5 asst. managers telling you different things to do, NONE assoc. with your actual position. Its the only job I have ever been in that punishes you for being the top sales person. I was the number one sales person in my dept. For my reward I was given back – more... office work to keep me off the floor. They should change the name from Gander Mtn to Bull MTN. All you do is push scam, borderline financial fraud instruments on people like their Pro Plans/Summits/and outrageous Credit cards. I learned that if you are in retail over the age of 30 you have failed at life. – less

Enjoyable Company, Good discount, No Pay Increases
Sales (Former Employee), Spring, TX – April 16, 2013
Pros: great co-workers, fun environment
Cons: no pay increases ever, management
Gander Mountain is a great company to work for. They are very understanding and willing to work around family tragedies/schedules, that is saying that you are a hard worker. If you work hard then they will treat you right. That being said, don't expect a raise EVER! They will hire people with less experience at a higher pay rate than yours and never – more... have enough money to hand out raises. They promise a 90 day review and raise, it won't happen. They promise a year review and raise, it won't happen. It's retail and they are only looking out for themselves. – less

Morning pain
Maintenance (Current Employee), Winston-Salem, NC – March 27, 2013
Pros: great benefits, close by
Cons: short or no breaks, little pay, terrible management
When I started there I was also attending school and working at another bushiness as well. A typical work day would be getting up really early (for me after working in the night) getting dressed in khakis and a color shirt go there and clean bathrooms, run a floor scrubber, pick up trash, and whatever task they wanted me to do that day. (more janitorial – more... then maintenance job which was false advertising there) What I've learned there is for the most part that people are nuts about guns, I also learned how to run different machines that assisted me during the day. Management here is very two face and picky they like who they like and help them but no one else. Your co-workers for the most part are nice people alot better then the management. The hardest part of the job for me was getting motivated to get there because to be honest I found little to no enjoyment and being there... – less
